Page 6 Pat Focuses on Charities

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the charities you support, and more importantly what happens to the money you donate? Well we are about to find out!

S.A.T. (Sociedad Protectora para Animales de Torrevieja)

When I arrived at the kennels, the whole place was buzzing. Apart from the barking dogs, there was a stream of dog walkers, kennel cleaners and staff starting their morning routines. Kennel manager Julia, who lives on the premises, has a fantastic group of workers who run the place like a military operation.

The photos were taken at an event to raise money and awareness for S.A.T.

While the dogs are walked, the kennel cleaners move in, disinfecting and washing the kennels, bedding and bowls ready for their return while the washing machines run constantly (a bit like my son’s house).

I had the pleasure of taking 3 month old Decker for his first walk after completing his injections, although he almost tripped me over weaving around my legs. Decker is just one of the 106 dogs that currently reside at the kennels. The food bill alone last year was over 9000€, then there are dog bowls (which have to be metal) mops and buckets (they don’t last long when used several times a day), vast amounts of disinfectant, beds, bedding, pet carriers, the list is endless. Add to that a yearly phone bill nearing 4000€, water, electric and vets fees averaging 5000€ a month, you can see why donations are so important especially as they don’t receive any government funding.

The vet visits every Wednesday when all new dogs, dogs on medication and any with problems are checked over. All the dogs are wormed, fully vaccinated and microchipped.
