QF Focus Magazine Cycling to “The village of El –Altet”. Distance: Approx: 60kms / Time: Allow 6 hours. Additional route to Santa Pola add 15kms and about 1½ hours.
Leave Quesada and head for Benijofar and pass through Benijofar heading for Rojales. Turn left at the second roundabout and cycle over the bridge, then straight on at the next roundabout and head for San Fulgencio. At the next roundabout turn left and head for Elche. Just keep following the signs for Elche on this road (it’s a good road quite quiet but can get busy and fast at peak times). You will eventually come to a dual carriageway and on your left there is a new cycle track that will take you all the way to Elche if you want to do that route sometime. Stay on the right side until you come to a roundabout with signs for Santa Pola, turn right here (brilliant little tapas bar at this roundabout by the way if you need a fi rst pit stop we normally stop here - it’s called Ursulas). Follow this road for a good 8 to10 kms until you come to another roundabout where you will see The Blue Star nightclub, go straight on and head for El-Altet. (If you turn right there is a cycle track all the way into Santa Pola). Again follow this road all the way until the next roundabout which takes you under the N332, then just follow the signs to El-Altet (about another 2kms). On the main street as you enter the village you will come to a set of traffi c lights, turn right here and you are spoiled for choice of tapas bars. We have tried most of them and they are all good.
After you have been watered and fed you can either retrace your tracks or, if you have plenty time keep going in the same direction, straight on at the roundabout at the edge of the town then at the end of the road turn right (straight on takes you to a beautiful beach with a bar etc). Just keep on going into Gran Alacant. You will come to another roundabout, turn left here and cycle up the hill into the main part of Gran Alacant. As you pass through the village stay on this road until you come to a small road on your left heading along the coast. This is a beautiful little coast road (if you miss this road you end up cycling up a very steep hill), just follow this road all the way along the coastline and you will eventually come into Santa Pola. This road is absolutely gorgeous, when we went, there were people jumping off the cliffs, paragliding and they seemed to be stuck in thermals as they stayed up for ages, the was a gymkana, jet skis, and people everywhere. There are plenty of places to stop and eat or drink on this road, also loads of places to lock up your bikes and have a swim. There is also a very small church on this route probably one of the smallest in the world. Follow this road into Santa Pola where you can either take the high road or the low road, we normally stay low along the water front, right into the centre of town where we pick up the signs for the N332. Go under the N332 and then pick up the cycle track heading for Elche and stay on this track until you come to The Blue Star night club and turn left. Then just retrace your tracks and head all the way back home. Beautiful route with lovely scenery all the way and it’s relatively fl at most of the way. Well done.
Summary : Nice long fl at route with beautiful coastal road and plenty places to stop and swim, eat etc.
