Author visits school to pick up book award

AN award winning Australian chil- dren's author called into Holmes- dale Technology College, College during a week-long whirlwind tour of England. Pupils of the 10 primary and secondary schools who took part in the Maidstone Area Book Awards (Maba) voted Morris Gleitzman’s book “Once” winner of the junior category. Emma Foreman, learning re- source centre manager at Holmesdale, emailed Morris to tell him of his success and invited him to visit the school if ever he came to England. She said: “Imagine my surprise

when I had an email from his pub- lisher, Puffin Books, to say they were organising a tour and would it be possible for Morris to come and visit to meet the students who are part of Maba. “I immediately agreed and set

the wheels in motion to invite the participating schools to the event. We had a fantastic morning with him.”

Morris talked to pupils about his latest book, “Loyal Creatures”.

The question and answer session had to be extended as the stu- dents had so many questions to ask him. He answered questions on

Work delayed

on gas mains ENGINEERING problems have de- layed work to replace gas mains in Snodland. Work started in March and was

due to take 26 weeks to complete. Most of it should have been finished as Town Talk went to press at the end of November. Chloe Boyce, of Scotia Gas Net-

works, said: “We’ve found the work has taken longer than anticipated to complete, due to engineering diffi- culties. We’ll need to come back next year to do a small amount of re- placement in Malling Road and High Street. “We’re very sorry for the delay and

we’d like to thank residents for their patience as we continue our essen- tial work to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the area.”

Fireworks funds

SEVERAL thousand people at- tended Snodland's annual fireworks display at Potyns Sports Ground but less than £1,880 was donated. There was no charge to see the fireworks and people are asked to make donations in the collection buckets. The fireworks cost £4,500 and the money collected will go to- wards the Christmas lights in the town.
