“We are the instrument of change. We can make a difference. We can change a system and culture in an
organization,” Shields said on the importance of industry conferences, such as the STN EXPO. “What do you envision it to be and what are the steps to achieve your vision? As John Fitzgerald Kennedy said: ‘One person can make a difference and every person should try.’” Shields is a member of National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and was a
western representative for the State and National Association Council. He has been a member of the National Congress for Pupil Transportation Operations Writing Committee and is a past state president and past re- gional president for the Oregon Pupil Transportation Association. With the STN EXPO Web site,
www.stnexpo.com, scheduled to be updated by the end of this month, the
theme for next summer is already set. As the economy continues to choke school districts, “Completing the Puzzle” will give attendees the necessary tools to piece together increased efficiencies. More than 50 workshops and sessions will cover the myriad ways school transporters can implement additional cost-cutting measures back home at their local operations without cutting corners on safety, the hall mark of the industry. ■
