Zonar Tapped to Aid Feds in Gathering School Bus Info
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a facility that
provides technical and project assistance to the U.S. Depart- ment of Energy, has partnered with Zonar Systems to research the effectiveness and potential of hybrid, plug-in hybrid elec- tric and battery electric school buses. Zonar will provide NREL with data derived from the battery systems that “fuel” the al- ternative school buses. “Zonar and their commercial data acquisition system (and
the willing fleets) will provide vehicle data to NREL,” said Kev- in Walkowicz, advanced vehicle testing activity lead at NREL. “Without this in place, NREL would need to individually instru- ment buses, which is a huge cost.” According to Walkowicz, Zonar was selected to participate
in the project after the lab worked with systems installed in a fleet in Denver and found them easy to use and cost effective in
collecting data. NREL then asked Zonar to cooperate in a larger study to create a larger data set. “We are proud that they looked at the data we can provide
and thought it was good enough to be used to make some work- able assessments of a what these school buses need to do,” said Zonar’s Don Carnahan. “Tey are doing this in a very responsible way rather than just develop something and try to go out and sell it to people and find out later that it’s not really up to the task.” Te project is a part of a federal program to fully understand
the drive cycle characteristics of a school bus, including gathering the typical characteristics and also a range of possible drive char- acteristics across the country, according to NREL’s Walkowicz. “NREL and the Department of Energy are very interested in
electrifying our nation’s transportation fleet. School systems might benefit from an electrically driven school bus but only if it’s designed properly and meets their usage requirements,” he said, adding that as batteries can be expensive and hav- ing too many batteries on-board can be cost prohibitive to production of a HEV, PHEV or BEV school bus. But, having too few could result in vehicles that can’t meet the needs of the fleet. “The data derived from the school buses will feed vehicle models to size and optimize electric drive systems of a school bus and aid in the proper testing of these vehicles on the road and in the laboratory.” ■
