185. An interesting two page letter written by Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) on ‘57 Broadway’ New York letter head dated ‘Dec 20/80’ to James Arthur Esqr, Joseph James Arthur, Glasgow, Scotland, with original envelope postmarked ‘NEW YORK DEC 23 6PM 80’, inscribed ‘My Dear Friend, The Cake has arrived & Mother has taken possession, nothing more will be seen of it until we have our own first party at Gesson when it will hold the place of honour & be decanted upon by her as she deals it round (in pieces small slices & take notice) & if ***** came in & find that a visitor has been given one bit with a glass of wine I always know the said visitor is “Chief” with mother and for her no surer test than this. I assure you Mr Arthur you reach reach mothers heart by this form of Remembrance. As for me being Americanized- *** by man, you know I am Scotch to the backbone. I wait till **** my estate and hopin to live my life in my native land-. Of course *** be a radical cut & cut- that’s in the blood the memories were always in the front- I consider all that has been proposed for Ireland as miserable shams- the land of a Nation must belong to the People of a Nation those who don’t reside on the land must not be permitted to own it- it will come to that. As you know that both parties here are clamering to be recognised as staunch defenders of Protection- It is the truth- I assure you the majority in America was never so overwhelmingly Protectionist as at this moment- & the west equally with the east- mark me, you will see no essential reduction of duties for years to come- but as we buy more from you than any other customer & will continue to do so you should be very good & kind to us- of course you will be- tell friend Moffat we shall make 125000 tons steel rail in 1881- at over 12fper ton, he knows what that means, we made over 13000 tons **** in Nov. 2-7 tons C*********, oh it beautiful- Im glad whear every whim of success of Scotland Steel Co. It is fully deserved- and now for the whole Arthur family a very very happy new year, sincerely your friend Andrew Carnegie (together with an additional pencil written ‘PS’ note and a letter written in ink whilst on a tour in Banchory). £100-200
