Making STORYTIME even more special this Christmas

S

torybook Wings always brings a smile to children’s faces no matter what time of year they receive their bedtime story. This

year, however, the RAF Association is hoping to make those smiles a little broader by sending a small Wings Appeal teddy bear with every story CD sent in time for Christmas.

Storybook Wings has been providing a vital link between serving RAF personnel deployed overseas and their children since 2008. It enables parents to record bedtime stories, along with personal messages, for their children to listen to while they are away, helping to ease the anxiety caused by separation. This anxiety is felt more keenly around children’s birthdays and Christmas, traditionally a time spent with family.

The Association has changed the criteria for parents wishing to record a story. Anyone spending time away from their child can now record a story from the long list of bedtime favourites, you don’t have to be deployed overseas. You also don’t have to be away for a long time: stories can be recorded by parents away for just a week.

Lisa Thipthorp, manager of the Storybook Wings project said: ‘“Initially stories could only be recorded by

parents who were deployed overseas for a minimum of three months. We recognise that children who have to be away from their parent for shorter periods due to working away from home during the week suffer from separation anxiety too. The RAF Association is also keen to support the welfare needs of these families.

“We wanted to send an extra something to children who would be

apart from a parent at Christmas. Our Wings Appeal teddy bears always prove popular at shows, so we will include one with every CD delivered in time for Christmas.”

The RAF Association provides recording equipment to parents for them to record their chosen stories. Thanks to generous donations from members and the general public the Association is able to fund the special editing and sound mixing equipment needed by volunteer editors. Once edited, a soundtrack is added to give each story a really special feel. The completed CD is then sent to the children in a

personalised CD cover, and is ready for them to listen to whenever they like.

To have a free teddy included with your child’s Storybook Wings CD, you just need to have sent your story to the Storybook Wings office by 15 December. Post allowing, all stories received on or before this date will wing their way to your little one with an extra surprise inside.

If you would like to record a story, please contact either your Hive or Lisa via email storybookwings@rafa.org. uk or by calling 01780 783645/RAF Wittering Mil (95351) 7538. 
