concessions for their families. There were also special rest and recuperation houses set up for female personnel engaged in particularly trying and intense work.

Many of the innovative schemes initiated by the Trust were subsequently adopted by the Government or other charities and continue to exist in their modern form to this day. For example, the Trust gave immediate (and unconditional) grants for recreational equipment whenever troops were deployed on operations, ranging from Malaya to the Falkland Islands. This initiative continued up until the publicly funded operational welfare grant scheme was set up.

The Trust routinely allocates over £1 million annually to the Regular and Reserve Armed Services and, since 1939, grants worth some £239 million at today’s prices have been provided (using income generated from Lord Nuffield’s endowment). Many service personnel will have travelled in the ubiquitous ‘Nuffield’ minibuses which were provided originally through Lord Nuffield’s ownership of Morris Motors but continue to be in great demand today. The 300 grants per year from the Trust cover all types of sporting equipment; recreational facilities such as cinemas and sports clubs; and audio-visual and computer equipment. The Trust also gives grants for adaptive equipment for disabled personnel, to

provide Christmas boxes for troops on operations, and for Forces entertainment shows. The Reserve Forces benefit from an annual trust grant to the Ulysses Trust who assists with the costs of expeditions. Over and above the annual allocation the Trust has given additional Capital Grants for large projects such as Outdoor Activity Centres, sports and social clubs, sports pitches, bowling alleys, yachts, gliders and aircraft. Service personnel and their families can also use the Nuffield Centre Anglesey with purpose-built holiday accommodation and a campsite, sailing centre, climbing wall and swimming pool.

The Trust also works closely with the Central Funds and Sports Boards of the Services and, together, they frequently co- fund the largest projects such as sporting Centres of Excellence.
