Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. Short Sea Director for the Port of Milford

Haven, Kevin Hobbs, said: “It is a great example of how the port’s investment, coupled with support

from

the European Union can make a huge difference for people in Pembrokeshire. What’s even more exciting is that this is just the first phase in a wider investment programme planned for Milford Marina Dock that’s beginning to gather pace. “The programme, referred to as the

Milford Dock Master Plan, will transform the area to attract more visitors and boost economic activity. New shops, open spaces for events, additional

activities and commercial fish processing units, as a well as more berths and facili- ties for the marina, are all part of the mix. It is hoped that this will enhance Milford Haven’s status as a vibrant centre for ma- rine leisure and tourism within this highly popular and beautiful waterway.” The project is the largest investment of

its kind at Milford Dock for more than 50 years. The main civil works reached com- pletion in October whilst the installation of the lock gates will take place between November and December. The new gates significantly reduce the

locking time, which in turn increases the number of locks possible within a 12 hour period. This makes Milford Marina one of the most accessible locked marinas in Britain. Work comprises the construction of new

concrete abutments, sill and dolphins to support and protect the gates; repairs and wall strengthening works; and the provision of berthing pontoons. In addi- tion, a number of operations are being undertaken to support the gate installa- tion works. High quality building and civil engineer-

ing construction specialist, McLaughlin & Harvey was the main contractor on the

civil works. The company has more than 100 years’ experience in the design and construction of new ports, so were the ideal choice for the project. Dutch company, Ravenstein is responsi-

ble for the installation of the lock gates, whilst ground preparation works were un- dertaken by subcontractors Quinn Piling. To keep disruption at the port to a min-

imum, site teams are continually liaising with customers and nearby residents to inform them of the works.
