Cash pledge for flood prevention

TONBRIDGE and Malling Coun- cil has pledged £100,000 to help prevent a repeat of the flooding which hit villages including East Peckham and Wateringbury over Christmas and New Year. The finance will be provided over

three years for development and design work to improve the capac- ity at the Leigh flood storage area. The council’s leader, Cllr Nicolas Heslop, also successfully lobbied political and business leaders at a meeting of Kent and Medway Eco- nomic Partnership to include £2.5m for the storage area in a bid for re- gional growth funding. The bid will be submitted to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership. Nicolas Heslop said: “Following

the floods in late 2013/early 2014 and a subsequent assessment of im- pact on communities and the local economy, the need to bring forward previously-planned improvements to the capacity of the Leigh flood storage area has become com- pelling. “The priority for the implementa-

tion of this project has been agreed between the Environment Agency, Kent County Council, key Govern- ment ministers and Tonbridge and- Malling Borough Council. “We know how important the

flood storage area is to protecting Tonbridge, Hildenborough and communities further downstream including East Peckham. These areas suffered severe flooding last winter, as the capacity of the stor- age areawas insufficient to manage the amount of flood water in the upper Medway catchment.” He added: “We know too well

that many homes and businesses were seriously flooded and fear of this happening again still exists for many. “The fear and threat of further

events clouds the vitality of com- munities and creates uncertainty for business and has become a drag on future investment.” The capacity improvements to the

barrier will cost £11.2million and ef- forts continue to secure funding for the work.
