School wins top award

THE MALLING School at East Malling has received national recognition for the value it adds to students’ achievements at GCSE level. An in-depth analysis of official Department for Education data on all state-funded schools in England by SSAT, the national schools’ membership organisation for improvement and collaboration, identified The Malling School’s success.

The school qualified for an SSAT Educational Outcomes Award by being in the top 20% of schools nationally for progress made by pupils between their key stage 2 results and primary school and their GCSE results at age 16. Sue Williamson, chief executive of SSAT, said: “The Malling School should be congratulated for their exceptional achievement. They have proved themselves to be leading the field in

improving GCSE outcomes for their students. These results are a testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team at The Malling School, and show what can be achieved when skilled teachers have high expectations and ambition for every young person.”

Carl Roberts, principal of The Malling School, thanked staff, parents and students for their efforts in achieving the award.

THE group set up to improve the appearance and environmental value of Clare Lake and its banks has been given funding for de-silting the lake. The Kent and Medway Groundwork Trust has granted more than £17,000 for the work, together with volunteer help. KCC Cllr Trudy Dean, current chairman of the Clare Lake Steering Group, said: “This fantastic grant will enable residents to fulfil a long held dream of de-silting the lake and returning it to a healthy environment for a variety of fish and birds, and create an attractive area for residents. We are very grateful to Groundwork, and to The Malling School, who have been working together with local residents to enable this project to go ahead. We hope to complete the work next year. All volunteers welcome”

measures include a 20mph limit area, reinforced by a chicane and speed table, and changed priority at the King and Queen junction.
