Where I live...
West Malling Parish Council High Street gas main replacement Work replacing the High Street gas main finished in September, well ahead of schedule. Parish councillors have extended their thanks to the contractors, J Beck Utilities, for not only finishing the job so quickly but also for causing the least possible disruption with the work.
Christmas lights The countdown for switching on the Christmas lights has begun. The High Street will be seasonally lit up on November 30 as a grand finale to the West Malling Christmas Festival.
These are some of the items discussed at West Malling Parish Council meetings in September and October.
Autumn safety A reminder that the days are getting shorter and it can be obvious when a house is unoccupied. Use timers to switch on lights and radios (check the volume level!) to give the impression that someone is home. And remember to talk to our local PCSO or the community warden if you spot someone or something that doesn’t seem quite right. They’re here to help our community stay crime free.
Local policing team The newest member of the West Malling and Leybourne policing team, PCSO Phillip Harrison, introduced himself to councillors at the September meeting. You can contact him by ringing 101 or why not stop for a chat when you see him in the High Street?
Farmers Market The next market will be on Sunday, November 23 but please note that the December market will be held on Sunday, December 14 to avoid clashing with Christmas. January’s market will return to the normal schedule of the fourth Sunday and will be held on January 25, 2015.
Auchel The Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Sasha Luck, joined M Jean-Claude Opiger and other members of the Malling Auchel Association in a short ceremony, planting an oak sapling in Macey’s Meadow. This was to celebrate 30 years of the twinning with Auchel, a small community 34 miles south west of Lille in the Pas-de Calais area of France.
Malling Society This year’s Heritage Open Days continued the success of previous years with an increased number of people visiting the Clout Institute in the High Street, the Twitch Heritage Centre in St Leonard’s Street and St Mary’s Abbey in Swan Street. Incidentally, 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of The Malling Society and the present members will be delighted to hear from past members and particularly anyone who was a founding member in 1965.

A KCC consultation on major changes to the community wardens service, established in 2002, has been published. This proposes to halve the number of wardens to 40 who will operate countywide rather than being allocated to specific parishes. The wardens will continue to provide core cover between 7.30am and 10pm and work with residents and partner agencies to tackle a wide range of risks including bogus callers, fly tipping, graffiti and vandalism. KCC’s plan is that by cutting the number of wardens and streamlining the service, it will save over £1 million but still offer support to young people and older or vulnerable individuals in the community.
And finally please note that parish councillors can be contacted via the parish clerk’s office on 01732 870872 during office hours. However, you may not be able to speak directly to the parish clerk for the time being but please be assured that if you leave a message with your name and a contact number, a member of the council will respond as quickly as possible. Or you will be very welcome at the next monthly meeting on Monday,
December 1 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Norman Road, West Malling.
