A recent test in Ivory Coast shows that West Africa’s mango trade can be extended by special containers that place the fruit in hibernation, says Maersk Container Industry. Star Cool containers were upgraded to work with controlled atmosphere for the trade from the Ivory Coast, operated by Africa Express Line. Star Cool CA reefers adjust O2 and CO2 levels, which in turn keep the fruit’s respiration and ripening under control. Normally, the mango season only lasts for 4-6 weeks in April and May, but five Star Cool CA containers loaded in May 2014 and then opened one by one over a period of four to nine weeks. Each time, the fruit generally turned out to be in the same condition as when it was loaded.

Samskip Multimodal has taken delivery of 63 new 20ſt custom- built flat racks for its Steel and Construction Logistics department. The design maximises internal loading space and minimises empty weight and can carry longer, higher and wider loads than would fit on a standard 20ſt flat rack, and an increased payload in the case of brick shipments, for example, two extra pallets per move.

Samskip has introduced 20 custom-built, low-weight 45ſt chassis from Krone to its Van Dieren Multimodal fleet. They weigh only 4.1 tonnes, increasing payload capacity and the specially designed flat fronted side makes this 45ſt chassis ideal for reefer containers.

Short-sea shipping line Unifeeder has gained Authorised Economic Operator status from the EU customs administration. It covers offices in the UK, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Poland.

Panalpina has launched an online less than container load (LCL) sailing schedule. It aims to simplify service selection on its network of nearly 35,000 point-to-point connections worldwide. Until now, customers had to call or email to find out about LCL options. The LCL Sailing Schedule is open to anyone, with no access codes or passwords required. Users enter their container freight station origin and destination, and the service provides up-to-date information on transit times, cut-off times, arrival dates, deconsolidation dates, plus the name of the vessel.

Dover Harbour Board has reappointed George Jenkins as chairman. He will serve a further minimum term of one year.

PD Ports has officially opened a £2.5 million new warehouse for Taylors of Harrogate in Billingham. Operations for the family tea and coffee merchants, best known for its Yorkshire Tea blend, have been moved from two warehouses at Teesport to a 105,000sq ſt space at Cowpen Lane. The move gives Taylors more warehousing capacity as its business expands and also enables PD Ports to collate tea by assembling bags of tea from different origins onto one pallet to assist in the creation of the blends.

The UK Major Ports Group launched a Manifesto for the UK ports industry at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham on 29 September. Ports4Prosperity called on the Government to work with the ports sector to support UK industry, pointing out that 95% of the nation’s trade in goods is moved by sea and that UK ports support 400,000 jobs and contribute over £21 billion to the economy every year. It also sets out five key ways government can help ports deliver more for the UK. It also appeals for a joined up approach across Government; better road and rail links; support for training and continuous improvement of health and safety; and a better land and marine planning system.
