GWYNT Y MÔR DEAL PAVES WAY FOR SIEMENS CONTRACT

A contract at one of Europe’s largest offshore wind farms has helped put ship operator Rix Sea Shuttle at the centre of the crew transfer vessel market.

STEP UP

James Doyle, Managing Director of Rix Sea Shuttle, said “The Welsh contract represented a step up in the work the company was carrying out in the renewables industry and put them at the centre of the crew transfer vessel market.”

Reef Subsea has employed two Rix Sea Shuttle crew support boats – the Panther and the Tiger – to aid cable installation vessels Polar Prince and Polar King.

“The two vessels we have supplied for Gwynt y Môr will be used to take engineers and technicians to and from individual wind turbines to support both first end and second end pull-in operations. One will operate 24/7 while the other will provide daytime support, then they will reverse roles to ensure the crews are properly rested.”

The company was awarded the work by Reef Subsea to support their two cable installation vessels at the RWE Innogy Gwynt y Môr development. It has now landed two contracts with Siemens, a leading provider of integrated wind power solutions and services. GWYNT Y MÔR WIND FARM Gwynt y Môr is one of the largest offshore wind farms currently under construction in Europe and once completed, will consist of 160 turbines with the combined capacity of 576MW – enough energy to power around 400,000 homes.

It is situated off the North Wales coast and is forecast to be finished by the end of this year.

IMPORTANT PROJECT Mr Doyle said: “Gwynt y Môr is a hugely important project for the renewable energy industry. It will be a real source of pride to be able to say we had a small hand in building it. So far, the project has been hugely successful.

“ Siemens is a byword for the renewables industry in the Humber region so to land these contracts with the company is another source of great pride for Rix Sea Shuttle.

LEADING OFFSHORE VESSEL OPERATOR

“Rix Sea Shuttle is relatively new to the renewables sector but is part of a long established shipping company. The Gwynt y Môr and Siemens deals have helped cement our position as a leading offshore vessel operator.

SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT He added one of the attractions of Rix Sea Shuttle was a significant investment in vital spares for each of their vessels, meaning the company could deal with any breakdowns very quickly.

The Rix Lion, the largest and newest vessel in the company’s fleet, has been employed by Siemens to carry out lube oil changes on the gear boxes at the adjoining wind farms Lynn and Inner Dowsing off the south Lincolnshire coast. Another Rix Sea Shuttle vessel, the Cheetah, will take engineers to and from turbines at the Walney 2 Wind Farm off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness, as part of a three month extendable contract with Siemens.

The deals mean that all the vessels in Rix Sea Shuttle’s fleet are working at wind farms off the British coastline for the first time.
