YORKSHIRE SPOTLIGHT AREA POTENTIAL

Seldom do you see such enthusiasm for change and such drive to embrace it. The people involved see the potential for the area and rightly, want everyone to know about it.

ONE COHESIVE BODY Alex Richards, Project Manager said: “We have learned that offshore wind doesn’t recognise local authority boundaries and if the region is to truly benefit we must bring together all the interests in the region to act as one cohesive body.

"When we stand together and present a united, capable and welcoming offering to the offshore industry we are world class.

"Our first priority is to make sure the offshore wind industry, located in our waters, is serviced from our shores!”

PARTNERSHIP REPRESENTATION In this vein Scarborough

Cllr Mike Cockerill

are working to bring together European and regional MP’s, local government, industries and communities in partnership to represent the region.

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration & Planning said: “When we work together our coast covers over 100miles of ‘shop front’ to the North Sea, leading to a world class industrial hinterland which can provide everything the offshore industry needs. The Yorkshire and Humber region has it all. With the right leadership and organisation we are world beaters. This is what we are trying to achieve.

"In this spirit networks have been established to work together across the region to develop the capacity of our supply chain industries, provide the education and training from children to adults and prepare our infrastructure to ‘embrace the revolution’.”

Cllr Mike Cockerill Scarborough Borough Council summed up the spirit of the borough – as the history of the area past and present tells the entrepreneurship of our communities and leadership is world class.

Cllr Derek Bastiman

“Wind energy is a massive opportunity for our economy, the energy security of our nation, the well-being of our planet and our future generations. We will embrace this opportunity and lead from the front. Not to lead would mean sweeping up what is left behind and that is not in our nature.”

WSOSW COOKING UP A TREAT

The people behind WSOSW believe they are well on the way to cooking up a real treat for the offshore industry and the local area. Yes, they recognise their

cake is relatively small compared to the great banquet of offshore wind but they also believe it’s one of the best on the table.

THE WSOSW RECIPE

A simple recipe which will serve 1 x North Sea Offshore Wind Sector.

Ingredients • A good pinch of community development, enthusiasm & leadership

• A portion of supply chain support and investment

• £12m of people, training and skills • £22m best quality Infrastructure • A policy oven at 360o

ED’S NOTE Method

Firstly prepare your working area by establishing a great team of local government, training, business and community leaders and win the support and enthusiasm of your community at large.

Then take over £10million and invest it in people, education and training, including establishing a University Technical College dedicated to providing the engineers and technicians of the future.

Add ‘54 North Maritime Training’ in Whitby, Yorkshire’s newly formed offshore Marine Training Centre, the Champions for Wind Programme running in our schools and mix in the Scarborough Employability Charter which binds our children with a commitment to employment opportunities from our industries.

Whip together with £2m of apprenticeship support and establish one of the most successful publicly funded employer and employee support agencies in the UK.

Next take a dedicated team of business ambassadors, support and development experts and provide business support, advice and funding for new entrepreneurs and business expansion within your supply chain and add them to the mix.

Finally bring all the ingredients together with Ministers and cross party MP’s to push Central Government Policy to the correct temperature and bang in the oven when at 360o. (The WSOSW team instigated the All Party Parliamentary Group for Yorkshire and N Lincolnshire to press Westminster for offshore wind policy development).
