Villagers’ bale to save tree

HADLOW Parish Council was due to meet to discuss its view on the possible fate of a protected black poplar tree at the centre of allegations linking it to accidents in the village.

KCC is considering removing the tree, claiming the raised ground above its roots blocks motorists’ view on the A26 at its junction with Carpenters Lane and has caused five accidents in as many years. Hadlow Parish Councilwas due to meet

on October 13 to give its response to the county council about possible remedies, including felling the tree, whichwas given a tree protection order in 1984 – two years before the junction was formed. The tree was previously contained within thewalls of the Hadlow Brewery. Residents, who have sent the county council a 350-signature petition opposing the loss of the tree, say drivers are the cause of crashes. Tonbridge and Malling Cllr Janet Sergi-

son has been helping the campaigners. She said: “Impatient and speeding drivers are

the problem. It’s not the tree.” Kent Highway Services first made Had-

low Parish Council aware of complaints regarding the tree impairing the visibility of motorists in April 2013. To remove the tree itwould have to sub-

mit a planning application to Tonbridge and Malling Council. Members of the pub- lic are invited to attend the parish meeting at the village hall in Three Elms Lane, Golden Green – opposite The Bell Inn – at 7.30pm. A spokesman for KCC said: “We at- tended a Parish Council meeting and have subsequently put forward an alternative option to them. At the moment, no final decision has been taken. “If the tree were to be removed, we

would replace it with one that is more suit- able.”
