SMURFIT Kappa Townsend Hook raised more than £2,500 at an It's a Knockout-style charity fun day for Pilgrims View care and support home at Roberts Road, Snodland. About 400 people attended the event at the Church of England pri- mary school. Gary Dobbie, one of the organ-
isers, said the last year had been a very busy time at the company, where a new paper machine is being built and employees had embarked on an 18-month in- house college learning and train- ing programme. "One of our projects at the col-
lege has been to do something that would benefit the local com- munity," he explained. "SKTH has always been very supportive of the people of Snodland and will con- tinue to be so. "Pilgrims View, which is run by the Avante Partnership, provides
short-term respite and long-term residential care for the elderly and for people living with dementia. They not only provide care and comfort, but also have a philoso- phy of care that encourages social interaction and engagement to give a much more positive and
meaningful quality of life." Gary added that Pilgrims View
relies on donations and its own fund-raising to make life better for the residents. There was a lot of support from
local businesses and financial sup- port from the company.

More than 30,000 schools across the UKwere sent a Football Remembers education pack or- ganised by the British Council, the Premier League, the Football As- sociation and the Football League. About 200 Key Stage 2 pupils
from the Church of England pri- mary school took part, and the one chosen was Samuel Groom- bridge (9), of Townsend Road.
Dan Pring said the pack con-
tained lots of activities to help cel- ebrate the centenary and the matches that took place. "We ran the competition as a home-learning task, as the chil- dren are extremely creative and it would give them an opportunity to express what they can do,” he said. "Unfortunately we could only make one entry per school." All the designs are on display at
the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and the winning entry will be decided by Prince William, who is also president of the FA, and England and Arsenal star, TheoWalcott.
Samuel Groombridge SpeedWatch Bowls a friendly affair
A FRIENDLY bowls match between Snodland Town Active Retire- ment Association (STARA) and Townsend Hook Bowling Club raised £432 for The Men United Prostate Cancer Charity. The match was attended by 20 players on each team, ranging
from county players to novices. There were also many supporters from both clubs. STARA chairman Bridget Cork said: "As it was a friendly match
the score did not matter, suffice to say that STARA (pictured) came second! The amount raised was magnificent, everyone had an en- joyable time and this should become an annual event. "My grateful thanks go to Angela Doorey and THBC for being
such willing hosts and to STARA members for supporting this wor- thy cause."
VOLUNTEERS are needed to man a camera to check the speed of motorists on Snod- land's roads. The Dual Message Board(DMB) is mounted on a pole. It displays motorists’ speed and, if necessary, asks them to slow down. Anne Moloney, chairman of
the town council, said: "So many vehicles are now speed- ing on our roads that something has to be done. "Speed Watch volunteers
need to be recruited and trained by the police. The monitoring equipment costs about £2,000 and it is hoped that the Snod- land Partnership and other agencies will fund it." The partnership has offered £1,000 once volunteers are in place. Details are available from the council offices in Waghorn Road or call 01634 240228.
