Town Talk

THERE could be no poppies in Snodland this year unless a Poppy Appeal organiser can be found. Despite the Royal British Le-

‘Sparkling’ life

of Grace, 101 WHAT do you give someone cele- brating their 101st birthday? In the case of Snodland's oldest

lady, Grace Spencer, it was an apron with the wording "Manufac- tured 1913, All original parts". Afterworking all over the country Grace, whose husband Joseph died in 1969, settled in Ostlers Court in 1987. She was only mar- ried for 20 years but said: "I had one of the best men going. I have been from Hull to Torquay and var- ious places in between – different people, different places but it has been a sparkling good life." Born into a dog-loving household

she has owned Alsatians for most of her life. Grace is pictured with her niece, Barbara Spencer and husband, Keith, who live in Halling. She said: "I have a lovely niece and a lovely nephew who I rely upon and they look afterme very well."

gion’s efforts to find an organiser, no-one has come forward. Town Talk reported in February

that June Miners, Snodland’s or- ganiser for 17 years, had retired. The RBL's advertisement said: "The organiser will be responsible

to give up time, mostly in Novem- ber, for the Snodland Poppy Ap- peal, you'll be helping to make a difference to our service family." Jane Ayers, British Legion com- munity fundraiser for West Kent,

A SNODLAND woman who raised £384 for Macmillan Cancer Support at a coffee morning in her house last year went a step further this year by holding the event at SnodlandWork- ingMen's Club. Joan Bavin, of Queen’s Av- enue, was helped by Sharon Vero, Sally Blacker and Sarah Stu- art to raise more than £840. There was a

said: "There is a very real danger that there will be no poppies in Snodland this year. "Poppies support for our Armed Service family. Our organisers help plan and oversee the appeal." Families or couples can act as

the organiser and more details can be obtained from Jane by tele- phone on 01622 793194 or email Jayers@britishlegion.org.uk.

School joins campaign SNODLAND Church of England Primary School organised a Macmillan coffee morning to coin- cide with a sponsored run to raise funds for PE equipment. Nikki Bishopp

and her daughter Sophie thanked parents and staff formaking cakes and cookies, which raised £400. "We had a re-

ally good turnout," said Nikki. "Parents ei- ther called in be- fore watching their children run or afterwards." Money raised by the run was still being totted up as Town Talk went to press.
