Award repair
THURNHAM’S Heritage Award will not be presented this year. Instead, councillors agreed the plaque was in need of a face-lift and a quotewould be requested for a new brass plate for the wooden trophy. The award is presented annually
to groups or individuals who have got involved in heritage or conser- vation projects. The council is confident the

COUNCILLORS will take up an invitation from Maidstone Coun- cil to discuss the local plan on October 27. Parish councillors from Boxley and Bearsted have also been invited to attend. In a round-up of planning news, councillors heard an appeal had been lodged against the refusal of the Waterside Park development
general, the level of trafficwas low, especially when compared to other roads in the parish, like Ware Street. Cllr Richard Smith said: “I think
it is unlikely a 20mph zone could be imposed here and, unlike some other routes, Thurnham Lane al- ready has a large 30mph sign and an interactive speed sign.” Cllr Ian Shelley agreed, saying
the main road safety issue for him was for those leaving the station.

ond proposal is the same as the first, on a slightly smaller foot- print. I can’t really see the point.” Members feared the move could pressure the borough council into accepting the second option.
Vacancy for new parish councillor
CLLR Mike Wise will take a place on the parish council’s planning com- mittee and Cllr Ian Shelley on the finance committee, following the resig- nation of Cllr Ruth Duncan, who was thanked for her contribution. The council is keen to receive nominations for a new parish council mem- ber at

He said commuters were left with- out a path, or lighting, under the bridge. Cllr MikeWise said: “I’mnot en-
tirely sure what more can be done, but I amopposed to traffic calming, which is self-defeating.” Mr Richardson, who was invited
to the meeting, did not attend. The council agreed that as the
issue is a highways matter the let- ter will be passed to Cllr Whittle to investigate.
Church plea
COUNCILLORS are hoping parishioners will volunteer them- selves as “foot soldiers” to manage St Mary’s Church on a trial basis. The parish council has been
working with the church to ensure St Mary’s remains open and enjoys greater use by the public. The Archdeacon of Maidstone, Stephen Taylor, has agreed to chair the meeting, at 7pm on October 2. The hope is that the church
would be run as a trust, with vol- unteers getting involved in the day- to-day running of the building. Parish council chairman Daniel Skinner said he hoped the public would respond to the call for vol- unteers.
