A survey by Dublin-based healthcare search engine
WhatClinic.ie has revealed the range in costs of private dental treat- ment in the 26 counties. The average private consultation fee in
Ireland was found to be €45, with cheapest in Co Westmeath at €28 and the most expensive in Co Cork at €64. Check-ups at a clinic in Westport, Co
Mayo, were found to be the most expen- sive in Ireland with patients in the county paying ı6 times that of the cheapest, in Limerick, coming in at just €ı0 according to the survey. The survey also found that, on average, patients in Co Cavan are charged €50
Nobel Biocare to be sold for €1.8 billion
BUSINESS
Nobel Biocare’s board of directors has unanimously recommended that the implant company’s shareholders accept an offer of 17.10 Swiss Francs (€14.13) per share from US healthcare giant Danaher Corporation.
The offer values the company in the region of €1.8 billion and would see it operate as a stand-alone company within Danaher’s dental platform, maintaining its own brand and iden- tity. Danaher already owns a range of orthodontics and digital imaging systems.
Reuters reported that analysts at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch said it was unlikely a counter bid would materialise after fellow dental implant companies Straumann and Dentsply ruled out their interest.
Rolf Watter, chairman of the Nobel Biocare board of directors, said: “We believe that the offer recognises the strategic value of Nobel Biocare and delivers a considerable cash premium to our shareholders.
“We view Danaher as the ideal strategic partner for the sustainable development of Nobel Biocare.”

for an extraction, compared with €93 in Co Carlow. The average for the whole of Ireland is €76. When it came to tooth whitening, the
survey reported that the average in Co Kerry was €388, more than double the cheapest, in Co Westmeath, at €ı59. Across the Irish Sea, costs in the UK also
vary dramatically with tooth whitening in London coming in at £600 (€755), whereas in Portsmouth the average is £ı63 (€205). The cost of a check-up is most expensive in Stratford-upon-Avon at £67 (€84), while in Bradford it costs an average of £ı5 (€ı9). Fintan Hourihan, chief executive of the Irish Dental Association, said: “Most
people choose a dentist based on word of mouth recommendation and trust. Dentists display their fees openly and the vast majority have reduced or frozen their fees in recent times. “A recent B & A survey showed that Irish
adults are with their current dentist for an average of eleven years which shows they value seeing a dentist they can trust and who offers high quality personal service. “We don’t know how the survey was
conducted or if it is comparing like with like. It’s a cost comparison website so it is in its interests to show major variations. We would always advise patients to talk to their local dentist and discuss fees with them.”
