999 awards for Kent firemen

THREE firemen from Maidstone have been honoured by chiefs from Kent’s 999 service. Station manager Charlie Smith,

crew manager Kevin Edwards and community volunteer Chris Wheal received certificates of congratula- tions from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) in a ceremony at Oakwood House, Maidstone. Charlie (pictured),whois based at

fire headquarters in Tovil, received hisaward in recog- nition of his efforts to increase aware- ness about demen- tia within KFRS and nationally, while Chris has been responsible

for improving fire safety awareness in rural areas, ensuring vulnerable residents get the support they need. Crew manager Kevin, from Boughton Monchelsea, also received a long service and good conduct medal. He joined KFRS in 1993 at 19, serving in Canterbury for three

years before transferring to Maid- stone, where he spent 14 years. He then moved to the training centre in 2009.Heis a qualified breathing ap- paratus, flashover and backdraft and road crash instructor. Kevin is also heavily involved in incident command training. He has two young children, Livia (five) and Fletcher (one) and has been happily married to Sarah for six years. Kevin said: “I am very proud to

have received my medal. I have been in the job for 22 years and it is all I have wanted to do since I was five.” The awards were presented by

KFRS chief executive Ann Milling- ton, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Kent Viscount De L’Isle MBE, and Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority chairman Nick Chard. Ann Millington said: “I am de- lighted to recognise the achieve- ments of our members of staff. All those receiving awards have exem- plified the very best of Kent Fire and Rescue Service.”

Lower speed will lessen severity in a crash.’” He added that even though Maidstone stands above other areas for the number of accidents, it does not indicate its drivers are more dangerous. In fact, he adds: “Our research suggests about 50% of those involved in crashes in the borough come from outside the area. The higher figure for Maid- stone reflects the high level of peo- ple travelling through it, compared as a pure number to other less populated/travelled through areas.” The number of casualties and

child casualties was slightly down on the previous year. “Clearly as a large district and, therefore, featuring high up the casualty data tables for Kent dis- tricts, Maidstone draws a lot of our attention and is often the focus for the campaignswe run.” The data reveals a lack of atten-

tion by road users as the biggest culprit in causing crashes on roads with speed limits of under 30mph.

Police dealt with incidents in

which 488 people were killed or seriously injured on Kent’s roads between 2011 and 2013. The ma- jority (257)were caused by drivers and riders failing to look properly, losing control of their vehicle, fail- ing to judge another person’s speed or path or a poor vehicle manoeuvre. In 2013 across the county there

were 2,903 road crashes, including 48 fatalities. The Urban Speed campaign will

use Kent radio, posters, online messages and short films to target drivers and highlight the nature of the hazards they could encounter and how to deal with them. View them at http://bit.ly/1Ca1Ykr.

Speed factor

WHILE most fatal crashes hap- pen away fromurban areas, the proportion of vulnerable road user fatalities (children, the eld- erly, cyclists, pedestrians, etc) is highest in urban areas. The risk of a pedestrian fatal-

ity is doubled when a vehicle travels at 35mph, compared to 30mph.
