Fence concern CONCERN was expressed at Tovil Parish Council about the safety of the fence fronting the old mill- stream in Albert Reed Gardens. A member of the public said the bottom of the fence was rotten in places and could be pushed over, leaving children at risk from falling in.

The parish council heard there remained an issue with who is re- sponsible for the fence. It will write to the borough council asking it to determine who is.

Wall ‘at risk’

A PROTECTED lime tree could be removed at St George’s House, St George’s Square, Tonbridge Road, Maidstone. A planning application said: “Roots are pushing out a retaining wall, which could collapse into the road and cause damage to building foundations.” The scheme would see the tree

felled to the height of the wall. Maidstone Council will decide the application.

Guilty of assault

LEWIS Bovell (21), of Allnutt Mill Close, Tovil, was sent to prison for 28 days after being convicted of as- saulting a man in Knightrider Street, Maidstone.

New victims of courier gang come forward

POLICE are reminding people to beware of fraudsters who steal large quantities of cash by claim- ing to be police officers. The tactic was used to trick an elderly couple from Ditton into handing over money from their bank accounts. Since then, two more people – a

63-year-old man and an 82-year- old woman, both from Maidstone – have reported that theywere tar- geted by the scam exactly two weeks later. The fraud involves an offender telephoning a member of the pub- lic to ask for their help with a ficti- tious investigation into money laundering, requesting that they withdraw funds from their bank account for use in evidence. A courier then visits their home to collect the cash. On some occasions after the call,

the fraudsters stay on the line while the victim calls what they be- lieve to be their bank – only to pro- vide their security details to somebody on the same number.

tion aboutwho they think might be responsible. “While this type of fraud has

been committed in numerous loca- tions across the UK in recent months, we believe the same peo- ple may be responsible for target- ing several different victims in Kent. “We are reminding everyone to

be on their guard against those who may attempt to deceive you, and to call us for verification if you are not confident somebody claim- ing to be a Kent police officer is genuine. “If you receive one of these calls,

One of the recent Maidstone vic-

tims has helped officers produce a computer-generated image of the courier who turned up at his home to collect the cash. Detective Constable Claire

Davey said: “We are now linking these offences and would like to hear from anyone with informa-

end it immediately and wait at least five minutes before using your telephone to clear your line from the scammer. “You should never hand over

any money or items to a courier as a result of this type of call.” “Anyone with information should call PC Chris Waterfall on 01622 604492, quoting reference number SI/YY/3619/14, or call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
