News Rowers mark club anniversary
THREE new boats have been named to mark the 30th anniver- sary of Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club. The club celebrated its 30th an-
niversary with a hog roast and barn dance for members and friends, fol- lowing the naming ceremony. Club vice president John Clayton
unveiled the eight-man boat, which was christened the Maidstone Pearl, following a speech by club chair- man Harry Salmon. Although there has been a rowing
club in Maidstone since the 19th century, rowing on the town stretch of the river in the 60s and 70s was restricted to the annual Medway head race and to the activities of the Royal Engineers Rowing Club. This year, the club is spending al-
most £30,000 on capital investment, including four new boats and new sculling blades. A double scull/pair boat was named Morgan&Tim in honour of Morgan Heller and Tim Grant, club members who have gone on to achieve great things. Tim has raced for GB at the Youth Olympics and both have raced forGBat the Under 23 World Rowing Championships. The pair are pictured top right with the boat named after them.
A third boat was named after
Robin Chapman, who has worked tirelessly with the club for more than 12 years. Mr Salmon said: “All clubs rely on their volunteers and Robin is an outstanding example to us all.”
Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club (MIRC) was started by John Clay- ton and Charles Jackson Jnr and began running annual town regat- tas.
When the Army relinquished the
site in 2000, the club obtained a long lease and began to develop the club
buildings. MrSalmon said: “The clubowes a
great debt to many of its members but I would like to single out John Clayton who has always had the vi- sion of what he wanted the club to be – a community-based club offer- ing the widest access to all whilst striving for success on thewater.” MIRC will be holding an autumn head race in Maidstone on Sunday, October 5. The timed 2k course will begin near the Malta Inn and end close to the ASDA Living store in the town centre.
Heroes on river
ACTION heroes were out in force when Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club juniors held a themed fun day to launch the start of the autumn rowing season. The day started with juniors and adult coaches taking part in the fun, with appropriately-themed games. The group was split into three teams, most
of whom were rowing in a relay up and down the river, which created quite a storm of attention from those on the towpath. The day finished with other games, some
water fights and general fun at the club, followed by a barbecue.
