CCTV talks

COUNCILLORS welcomed on- going talks to have CCTV cameras installed in some of the area’s crime hotspots. In the latest incident, youths

armed with sticks were reported acting in a threatening manner in Wharf Road. The parish council has- discussed putting a camera in the area, possibly on Tovil Footbridge. This will involve extending the height of the lamp-post. Failing that, they will be looking elsewhere in the immediate area. Cllr Derek Mortimer said: “We do

notwant to move the parish council camera at the Wharf Road/Church Road junction as this is doing a good job. So we have found three potential sites for anew camera and talks are quite promising at the mo- ment.”

Work starts to convert old school to flats

COUNCILLORS heard that re-development work is ex- pected to start shortly on the former school in Church Road, Tovil. Permission has been granted to charity Maidstone

Community Care Housing Society to convert the former school, which closed in 2011, into seven supported-living flats for young people with learning disabilities aged 18- 24. The setting will assist them in making the transition from living with parents or at residential colleges to in- dependence in the community. Councillors heard the development was expected to be open by next September.

A REPORT will be sent to Maid- stone Joint Transportation Board about the condition of Nu Venture buses serving Tovil. It followed a complaint from a member of the public, who said: “The buses arrive on time and we have more services, but I can’t see whywe are paying the same fare as those sitting on fabulous eco- friendly buses elsewhere when ours are old V-registration vehicles.” County councillor Brian Clark

firming that corrugated sheets on site contained white asbestos. The area has been cordoned off

andwarning notices put up. Some members felt the council

and VCS, having been made aware that there was potentially asbestos on the site, should have negotiated its removal before agreeing a price for the land. However, Tovil Parish Council’s chairman, Cllr Glyn Charlton, said: “The landowner made it clear
