Truck DrivingChampionships 2014Nebraska Nine drivers advance to Nationals Te annual Nebraska Truck Driving


Championships offers Nebraska’s best professional truck drivers a chance to demonstrate their knowledge, talent, and skills in a competition highlighting what it takes to be a safe driver on today’s streets and highways. Sixty-nine drivers participated in this year’s Championships competition in 9-classes: straight truck, three-axle, four-axle, five-axle, five axle sleeper, tank, flatbed, twin trailer, and step van. Additional awards are presented based on scores in the four separate test areas, including written examination, personal interview, pre-trip inspection, and the driving test. Team awards are also given to the company with 3 or more drivers competing with the highest overall score. Te 2014 overall Grand Champion is

had the highest combined score on the written test, pre-trip inspection, personal interview, and driving course. Te Professional Excellence Award goes


to the individual with the highest score on the written test, and was awarded to Timothy Dean, Werner Enterprises. Nebraska Trucking and the


Championships have a long tradition of a positive working relationship with our state patrol carrier enforcement troopers. Tis award was named in honor of Bucky Buchholz, a State Patrol officer and long-time Championships Steering Committee member. Te Bucky Buchholtz Top Driver Award goes to the driver with the highest score on the driving course, and went to Kenneth Cooper, Old Dominion. Te Vehicle Condition


Award, which goes to the person with the highest score on the pre-trip inspection, was awarded to Larry Derr, Werner Enterprises. Te Jerry Wessel Award, named in honor


of a long-time committee member, is awarded to drivers who have either competed or volunteered at the Championships for at least five years and are rated on professionalism, industry knowledge, and attitude. Tis year’s recipient of the Jerry Wessel Award went to David Kuscher, Crete Carrier Corp. Te Rookie of the Year Award is given


to a first-time participant for having the highest overall score in all four parts of the competition. Tis year, the Championships had 25 rookies competing, and Garet Poland, Bosselman Carriers, received the award. Te top three places were awarded in each
