Te company takes pride in the way it


treats its drivers, an outgrowth of the fact that its founder once was one. Its turnover rate is better than the industry average, Leathers said. More than 3,500 drivers have been with the company five years or more. Many drivers and employees joined the


company through its Operation Freedom efforts. Working with the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, the company pledged to hire 5,000 military veterans over five years – a goal it easily will reach. About 1,400 were hired during 2012, another 1,700 in 2013, and this year the company is on pace to hire more than 2,000. Twenty-five percent of the workforce consists of veterans and veterans’ spouses, and the company has set a goal of reaching 30 percent during the next two years. Servicemen and servicewomen can apply their G.I. Bill to their training at Werner Enterprises. Te company also operates three military-themed Operation Freedom trucks, each driven by a veteran. A fourth truck designed to honor military spouses – to be driven by a military spouse – will soon hit the


road. Full-time associates help employees with Veterans Administration benefits and work with military transition units to provide job placement services. It’s no wonder Werner is ranked among the G.I. Jobs 2014 Top 100 Military Friendly Employers and was ranked among the Top 50 Military Spouse Employers by Victory Media, the parent organization of G.I. Jobs. Te company is a good corporate citizen


in many other ways. Nearly 400 of its associates volunteer their own time as part of the Werner Blue Brigade. Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and other worthy causes have benefited. Te company annually gives more than $750,000 a year in monetary donations to charities and more than $250,000 in in-kind donations. Werner is involved in the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership to improve energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. Te company has installed auxiliary power units, improved its trucks’ aerodynamics, reduced its truck weights, and taken other steps. Meanwhile, it has implemented recycling programs for oil,
