like Nebraska. A 2010 study of the state’s economic sectors by the Battelle Technology Partnership Practice found that the state’s employment in the transportation, warehouse, and distribution logistics sector grew at about 9 times the national rate from 2001 to 2007. Nebraska also ranks first in the nation in the number of truck drivers per capita, said Larry Johnson, president of the Nebraska Trucking Association. One out of every 12 workers in Nebraska is employed in the trucking industry. “What works is when you’re able to show

the power of the total industry,” said Larry Johnson, president of the Nebraska Trucking Association. Te association has made a point to speak to people in small towns around the state about the financial benefits of having truck drivers live and pay taxes in their communities, and he’s seen attitudes change, Johnson said. With the development of the Trucking

Moves America Forward campaign, Johnson said, he now has one more tool to use. “We are just excited about being able to use

it in Nebraska,” he said. “It’s a very universal, powerful statement, and it’s adaptable to each individual state. We plan to use it to highlight the fact that we’re a large part of the Nebraska economy for business investment and job growth.” Reaching the general public is another

main goal of the TMAF movement. “People have the wrong impression based

on a few bad apples in the industry,” Mason said. “Tey’ve either been scared on the road or scared into thinking about accidents, the ‘big bad truck.’ People don’t realize the importance of trucking economically. Everything they wear, eat and buy has some kind of economic connection to trucking and the road. Trucking’s safety record has improved dramatically over the last 20 to 30 years compared to the automobile population. And the industry has become more friendly to the environment with improved emissions standards, cleaner engines, use of natural gas. We’ve made strides in the area of sustainability and we want people to know that. We’re safe, we’re essential and we’re sustainable.” nt
