Matt Schaeffer Safe & Sound Mobile Electronics Manassas, Va.
Years as an installer: 13
Non-installation related duties: “Artist, audiologist (versed in sound waves), wood worker, mechanic, tire tech, window tinter, upholsterer, customer therapist, custodian,
salesman, painter, and fiberglass specialist.” Proudest professional career moment: “It would be my first maga- zine feature of an install I did as a professional. To open a magazine and see my name and my work portrayed for a huge audience was very exciting.”
Biggest mistake ever made as an installer: “Te only thing that comes to mind is one of my first flip-down installs I did about 10 years ago. I started cutting through the headliner for the mount of the bracket and didn’t realize the sunroof cover was slid back over top where I was cutting. Pretty smart! I accidentally cut into the sunroof shade. I had to drop the entire headliner and replace the sunroof shade.”
Tree biggest loves, other than installation: “My one seed by far is spending time with my wife and daughter. My two seed is teeing it up! I love to golf. I can’t think of anything more relaxing. My three seed would be following sports. NFL, MLB, PGA Golf, NBA, NHL, you name it. I’m all in.”
Biggest influence in terms of expertise, professionalism and work ethic: “Two people who affected my career in a positive way would be Dan Cook of Blazin Auto in Greencastle, Pa., and Rich Pietraszko of Safe & Sound. Rich Pietraszko, my current employer, taught me to strive to be perfect. Since perfection is so hard to achieve, try to measure 100 times along the way and always make sure your measurements never changed so it appears perfect.” Vision for life in five years: “Well, I would like to win the mega mil- lions for starters! But realistically, when I reflect on where I was as a complete installer five years ago, I have had so much growth in knowledge and execution. I expect the same five years from now.”
C.J. Silvey Foss Audio and Tint Puyallup, Wash.
Years as an installer: 21
Non-installation related duties: “‘Providing customers and clients with technical support for their new and used electronics. Sales, customer service,
sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, accounting, shop maintenance, building repairs, electrical, painting and remolding.”
Proudest professional career moment: “Hands down, my proudest moment is when a customer who has had a bad experience that negatively influenced them toward car audio shops comes in and I am able to change their thoughts on our industry. Especially when they smile ear to ear.” Biggest mistake ever made as an installer: “Early in my career I may or may not have screwed into a ‘73 VW Bug’s gas tank. I did pull the tank and weld it up, though.”
Tree biggest loves, other than installation: “I love to build custom cars and trucks, watch my boys grow and follow in my footsteps with their love of cars. I also enjoy sitting back to watch a movie.” Biggest influence in terms of expertise, professionalism and work ethic: “My father’s work ethic: work hard and provide. Bryan Schmitt’s design and expertise. My expertise I owe to many coworkers and friends I’ve worked with in the past; without them I wouldn’t be as good as I am today.”
Vision for life in five years: “In the next five years I would like to have a partnership in a location to expand the franchise so I’m able to teach and guide newcomers the correct ways of installation.”
