Solent SME 100 campaign launched

One hundred SMEs from across the region with a combined turnover of nearly £875 million and employing some 9,000 people are listed here in this, our first, Solent SME 100 grouping

Manufacturing and engineering companies feature strongly in the Solent SME 100, but so too do services from finance to marketing.

The Solent SME 100 – supported by leading law firm Moore Blatch, accountants and business advisers James Cowper, and Santander bank – lists the top companies by turnover below a £10m ceiling.

The new campaign by The Business Magazine will see SMEs on the list invited to networking events, including a business breakfast launch in September at Chilworth Manor, near Southampton.

David Murray, publisher of The Business Magazine, said: “Our SME 100 in the Thames Valley has proved a great success, so we thought it high time we launched a similar listing in the Solent region. We are delighted that support has come from Santander, James Cowper and Moore Blatch, all of whom offer excellent services

for the SME sector, and understand the important role that small and medium- sized enterprises are playing in the recovery.“

The Solent SME 100 is a listing of private UK businesses that are based in an area that takes in Hampshire, much of Dorset, plus parts of Wiltshire and West Sussex.

The official launch of the list is on Thursday, September 25 at a business breakfast at Chilworth Manor, at Chilworth, near Southampton, where Santander’s head of manufacturing Charles Garfit will present on the latest trends in the sector. Further events will include a Roundtable discussion in the winter.

Companies at the top

At the top of the list is Winchester- based Roofline Group, the UK’s leading independent flat roofing, waterproofing and green roofing specialist, working in various sectors including education, healthcare and retail.

With 9.5 million meters of installations to date, Roofline, which has won numerous industry awards, works on projects with values ranging from £10,000 to £3 million.

Second is AB Precision of Poole (ABP), an electro-mechanical engineering company offering automated assembly systems. ABP’s technology is used by bomb disposal units and in military equipment, and in areas from mail sorting to automotive component production.

The origins of ABP go back to 1966 when the company was primarily a contractor to the Ministry of Defence. Today, its systems are used around the world, and the company’s motto, espoused by CEO Adrian Blyth, is: “We do things as a matter of course that other people don’t do.“

Third in our SME 100 is Waterlooville- based Hi-Technology Group, another company with awards to its name. Hi-Tech, as it is best known, offers complete injection moulding solutions from concept to manufacture.

The company has enjoyed year-on-year growth of 10% per annum since 2007. That growth has also been experienced at its Slovakia plant, a dedicated European injection moulding facility.
