Training & Development

It’s amazing to look back at the achievements of some of our learners and we wish them all the very best for their future careers. There are so many to mention, but here are a few more former Myerscough College students that you may or may not be so aware of;

Christine Walkden – Christine is a television presenter, celebrity horticulturalist and plantswoman, best known for her appearances on gardening programmes, The One Show and BBC Radio 4’s Gardener’s Question Time.

Paul Burgess – Paul is one of the world’s leading groundsmen, currently in charge of the playing surface at the Bernabeu, the home of Spanish footballing giants, Real Madrid

Almost a year in the making, John has worked closely in partnership with sponsors and engaged Myerscough College apprentices within the garden build process. The finished design sees a striking metal sculpture of a crouched figure leaning against a slate wall. A hand dips into a nine metre long water channel, leading the figure through a series of stone columns that decrease in height and become smoother until they blend with the planting, demonstrating a young person’s journey into society and adulthood.

Rob Musgrave – Rob is a highly respected technician in the world of Formula One. He’s currently number one mechanic to Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team.

Anthony Pilkington – Anthony has risen through the footballing ranks to become a Premier League star with Norwich City, as well as a full Republic of Ireland international.

John says: ‘’It’s wonderful to see the design come together after twelve months of planning and a two week intensive build. The garden represents a story of a girl 'reaching out' for help and guidance in trying to overcome many obstacles in life. It's great to have the support and sponsorship of Myerscough College in this project and the input of Myerscough Apprentices as part of the garden build has been really appreciated and inspiring."

‘’The concept behind the garden evolved following a discussion with young people living locally. In the interests of local growth and in the future of the planet, young people should be encouraged to go into the gardening and landscaping industry.’’

Nick Atkinson, Workbased Co-ordinator, Horticulture at Myerscough College, attended the show and said: ‘’The garden got a lot of very positive interest and feedback, including the BBC filming the garden for 50 minutes and showing it on their coverage.’’

‘’Household names in the industry, such as garden designer, Diarmuid Gavin, were very positive about Myerscough College’s involvement and the importance of getting the apprentices involved in the whole Chelsea build and show experience. John has been that impressed with our Apprentices involvement that he’s now

offered to come to College and give a talk to our students.’’

The apprentices, who are both with Amey Plc, based at Kensington Gardens as part of the Royal Parks Apprenticeships scheme, are also to be involved in the operation to dismantle the piece ahead of it being recreated on a roundabout in Blackburn.

Antonio Figueiredo said: "John, the designer, explained the concept of the garden as we arrived on site so we could understand what he was trying to achieve. It was good to get involved in all aspects of the build including building, planting and preparing the stone. I’m really pleased the garden achieved a gold medal.’’

Calum Mackenzie said: "Helping build the show garden was a great experience and it is not often you get to go to a place where so many designers and trades are working together. I am pleased for John to achieve a Gold medal, being a first time exhibitor at Chelsea. He was very supportive and great to work with. It was also an interesting opportunity to look around other show gardens being constructed"
