THREE YEARS LATER: HOW LIFE HAS CHANGED FOR ME

www.graduatemag.co.uk

When coming to ‘the end of an era’, some people tend to reminisce, ponder, and just have a good old think about that particular phase of their life. Admittedly, I am usually one of those people and the university phase has not been an exception. Neither should it be: the eighteen year old that moved into university halls of residence nearly three years ago, is not the same

one graduating in a couple of months time. I can honestly say, the change is good, and whether people like to admit it or not, or even realise it, university does change you, and for me personally, it’s definitely been for the best and that’s mainly down to the student lifestyle of having to live with not only yourself but with other people.

It’s probably an obvious choice to go for, but ‘independency’ is by far, the most pronounced and the most rewarding change to have occurred. Your parents leave you in this bubble and you simply have to just get on with it and learn as you go along (minus the odd phone call home and frantic google search). And for me, being thrown in the deep end was the best method, because what other option was there for me to do, other than ‘get on with it’? I have successfully managed to ‘stand on my own two feet’, people actually enjoy my cooking

A ski or snowboarding season abroad is an excellent opportunity to gain some valuable skills in a wide variety of areas, whilst working in a new environment with a new people. If you are unsure what to do when you graduate, I would encourage you contemplate a season abroad, not only does it looked good on your CV but it also provides

you with an opportunity to progress in language, catering, cultural and social skills. The season stretches from November through to April, and applicants normally start applying at the beginning of May, however positions are available throughout the season. No previous ski or snowboard experience is needed, however it is encouraged.

Now an important question is where? Depending on your preference, it is always snowing somewhere! First time applicants tend to stick to the alps, therefore you’re not too far away if any trips home do need to be made! (Fingers crossed they don’t). The world snowboard guide suggests St Anton in Austria is the best resort overall, but again it depends on your personal preferences – if you know any French then of course its logical to head to France and will be recognised when applying.
