James Cowper celebrates the Thames Valley’s most successful charities

Thames Valley accountants and business advisers James Cowper has once again joined The Business Magazine to celebrate the Thames Valley’s most successful and exciting charities and not-for-profit organisations

The Charity of the Year Award, part of the Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards and sponsored by James Cowper, offers charities and not-for-profit organisations the opportunity to be profiled on a region-wide stage and have their hard work recognised and celebrated by the wider business community.

It is, says last year’s winners, Style Acre, a terrific Winning with Style

In 2013 Style Acre was given this prestigious award for its work in providing supported living for over 70 people, day opportunities for a further 80 and work development opportunities across Oxfordshire. It provides employment for 240 staff and delivers a wide and varied programme for its beneficiaries.

“We are proud of our achievements, from being pioneers of person-centered care in the 1980s to being the most sought after provider of care for people with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire today,” says Kate Liddle, chief executive of Style Acre.

“We are committed to providing the best possible support in innovative and creative ways and we felt that entering this award would provide a platform to showcase our work, raise awareness about learning disability and Style Acre and enhance our fundraising activities.”

Liddle continues: “Staff, beneficiaries and the families of people we help are very much a family and were all delighted when we won the award.

“Winning the award has enabled the charity to enjoy enhanced media coverage, and we made reference to this award in communication with major supporters and ambassadors, which has helped to cement their support and engagement.”

A lasting legacy

In 2012, the award was given to Helen & Douglas House, a charity providing hospice care to children and young adults across Oxford and neighbouring counties. “Its impact”, says Tom Hill, the charity’s chief executive, “is still being felt two years later.

“We decided to enter the award to raise the profile of the charity’s reach and to demonstrate that business acumen, principles and systems are as important to a charity as they are to commercial enterprises,” Hill explains.

“In entering the Thames Valley Business Awards we wanted to demonstrate that Helen & Douglas House could hold its head high, not only as a charity, but as a well-run business entity.

“Winning the award was a wonderful boost to morale throughout the charity,” he added. “Staff and volunteers were thrilled by the award. Everyone who works for Helen & Douglas House believes that it does great work. We are all very proud of what we stand for. It was so gratifying to hear respected members of the Thames Valley business community commend the charity for its business practices.

“It has increased awareness of Helen & Douglas House’s work throughout the Thames Valley business community. And that awareness is key to opening doors in the business community.”
