Grits & Groceries 2440 Due West Highway Belton, SC 29627 864-296-3316

Grits & Groceries – that is what I found

while riding along the Abbeville Highway out of Anderson, SC searching for great fall fo- liage photo-ops. Turn down the Due West Highway and you might see an unexpected crowd gathering in front of what appears to be a country store. Unexpected becomes an understatement as you make your way through people jockeying for parking places and greeting one another before finding a spot on one of the many benches to wait on a table, either inside or outside at this local gem. When entering the old grocery store that

has been converted into this popular restau- rant, it is easy to imagine how it was 50 years earlier. With old products still lining the shelves and the signs and décor to match the experience, if you squint a little you can pic- ture your grandmother walking through the door, looking as she would have when you were a child. Lucky for the Anderson/Belton/Due West

area, after extensive experience under Emeril Lagasse working in his famed Nola restaurant in New Orleans, husband and wife team Heidi and Joe Trull decided to move to the Caroli- nas and open their dream restaurant, serving comfort food with a twist. This popular spot has something for everyone on their menu, no matter what you are in the mood for. Being a sucker for a Shrimp Po Boy, I or-

dered one thinking it would be a good hearty lunch, but when the sandwich was served with the most delicious homemade Re-

moulade Sauce I had ever tasted, I would have sworn I was in heaven. The name is cer- tainly right – New Orleans Shrimp Po Boy ($10.50) was better than any shrimp po boy I got while visiting in New Orleans a few years ago, and that is saying a lot. For dessert, I had the Muscadine Ice

Cream ($3.00) which captures the flavor of muscadines nearly bursting with ripeness right off the vine. I could not imagine any- thing more southern to top off such a perfect sandwich. Although it’s off the beaten path, make

any excuse you need to get to Grits and Gro- ceries. They are open Tuesday through Thurs- day each week from 10 am till 2 pm. Friday and Saturday they are open from 9 am till 2 pm. They also are open on Thursdays for din- ner from 5 pm till 9 pm. But you’d better get there early! •
