ILSA Chapter Happenings

the event Marcella Distefano. For this reason, the chapter staff will provide an information point where brochures about ILSA and submission forms will be available for the other students who wish to become members.

The Conference will focus on the principle of self-determination of peoples in its more up-to- date aspects. It will be held on Friday the 30th of May 2014 in the Aula Magna of the old academic venue of the University of Messina. The meeting aims at providing a platform for international legal scholars to discuss one of the oldest and most complex international law topics, both taking in consideration the classical inter-State dimension and the expansion of international economic law.

The extremely recent situation in Crimea and the global economic crisis have shown again how

topical the principle of self-determination of peo- ples is and how essential it is that both academ- ics and practitioners further investigate the issue. Therefore, the subject will be analysed through these two sub-themes, each one exploring dif- ferent characters and developments of rules and principles governing the self-determination of peoples at the international level. Experts from six Italian universities and from the Institute of International Legal Studies of the Italian National Research Council will therefore present unpub- lished and up-to-date papers open for debate.

After the Conference, the next immediate chal- lenge for the ILSA Chapter Messina will be the publication of the Conference Proceedings; the members will be therefore engaged in finding the necessary funds.
