I wanted to run to my son, to shout and protest, mostly I wanted to cry unashamedly. You will probably think that is a bit far fetched, but I can still remember the pain I felt on that day. For those moments it was as if I was Mary.

Her torment must have been immense. Mary didn’t have the benefi t of hindsight that we have. She’d yet to hear of the resurrection and know the joy of Easter Sunday.

Spare a thought this Easter for the Son of God dying to pay for your sins and mine, and for His mother who suffered alongside Him. Then rejoice with me for the good news of Easter Sunday. He is risen!

Just a thought ....

Living in an essentially Catholic country we cannot go far without a reminder of Mary the mother of Jesus Christ. We all remember her at Christmastime, but I wonder how many of us think of her at Easter as well.

I must admit I’d given her very little thought at Easter until 1992. My 18 year old son had been picked to play Jesus in a production of the Easter story put on by our church. My husband and I sat proudly in the congregation at our son’s adult acting debut, waiting for the play to start. We were surprised at the excellence and high standard of the performance as it began, and I was soon sucked into the story line. Then the dark events of Good Friday began to kick in and ‘Jesus’ (my son) was dragged for questioning. ‘Jesus’ (my son) was abused, spat at and whipped. My stomach churned. Then ‘Jesus’ (my son) was laid upon a cross and a Roman soldier raised a mallet to plunge imaginary nails into his hands and feet. My son cried out in agony at each blow, and then the more so as the structure was raised and thudded into position. At that moment I knew, at least in part, how Mary felt.
