Downtown is on Fire “

By JAX Chamber If you have been in Downtown Jacksonville during the last

six months or so, you’ve probably seen the ball of flame icons and the bold message stating Downtown Jacksonville is on Fire. This shout-out to our robust history references the Great Fire of 1901, which marked a turning point for Downtown Jacksonville. Like those days in mid 1901, present day Downtown is bouncing back and rapidly becoming a vibrant 24-hour city again.

Here are just a few reasons why. The Brooklyn area of Downtown has always been host

to the who’s who of large corporate offices, but now it will boast the newest luxury apartment communities and upscale retail establishments in town. One of the new developments, 220 Riverside, will unveil an expansive public park named Unity Plaza featuring nearly 300 events a year. The central core on the Northbank is readying itself for major projects as well. Work will soon begin on the Haydon

Burns Library, which will be converted into a nonprofit office co-op and mix use project. The iconic Jacksonville Landing is preparing for a facelift with a fresh design and exciting new restaurants and nightlife venues. Across the St. Johns River, the Southbank Riverwalk is being rebuilt into a beautiful esplanade connecting the revitalized Friendship Fountain with the Southbank’s considerable hotel and high-rise residential stock.

Our Skyway continues to grow its ridership connecting

Downtown residents. The free monorail system is easy to use and children love the experience. If you’re looking for a fun, inexpensive outing with the little ones—this is the place to go. With connections at our excellent Downtown Library, Museum of Science and History, the Museum of Contemporary Art as well as many galleries and eateries, it is no wonder it has surpassed a million passenger trips this year.

No review of Downtown would be complete without talking

about our fabulous restaurants. We have epic seafood, award winning steaks, wine bars, cigar bars, dive bars, international bistros, live music venues and many, if not most, of the new ventures have been founded by young entrepreneurs. The Elbow on the Northbank, where Bay Street and Ocean Street meet, is the hottest of hot spots with excellent choices for a girls’ night out, a live jazz set or dancing with the stars. With more than 100 restaurants, Downtown has something for every palate. And where there are gaps, there are food trucks. Downtown is a hub for epicurean vehicles, featuring more than 50 trucks in rotation all over the city and at rallies like JAX Chamber’s own Community First Saturdays.

Downtown has always been the cultural, business and

spiritual center of the city, but like the campaign says—it is hotter than ever. There are multiple opportunities to get involved, and go out and have fun.
