CHOOSING A UNIVERSITY AIMEE DUTTO
You have decided that you want to further your studies at university, but are unsure of which university to choose. It can be a daunting decision as it is somewhere that you will be spending the next three years or more, and there are over three hundred universities and higher education colleges in the country to pick from. There are many questions to consider and you should make sure that you are confident in your choice before applying via UCAS. Is it the right thing for you?
• Choosing : The Course & Location
The first step should be deciding on what you actually want to study and which subjects will interest you. To help you to do this, you should think about what you may like to do in the future or what current interests you have. This will help in finding out which university is right for you by narrowing down the ones that may specialise in your chosen subject. It would be helpful at this stage to have some kind of idea of what sort of job you would like in the future. However, if you are still unsure of the career you would like to pursue, make sure the course you are choosing is something that you are really going to enjoy.
Lots of research is necessary and to do this you can look online as there are many
websites to help you. Online quizzes and questionnaires can narrow down your choices or suggest the best places for you too. You can try reading the university league tables in newspapers like The Guardian and The Times. Another great way of exploring your options is to attend various open days held by the universities themselves. They usually give you lots of useful information, advice and freebies.
It may be helpful to speak to existing students or people you know that are studying a degree to help you understand what is involved and what may be expected of you. Joining groups on Facebook and Twitter, and reading student blogs may also be helpful. Nobody knows better than the people that have experienced it themselves!
