HOW TO DECIDE ON YOUR next career step
It’s never too early to start thinking about your future career. Whether you have a dream job in mind, know vaguely what industry you want to work in or have absolutely no idea what you want to do, there a few key stages you should complete before deciding your next step.
Identify what motivates you
Fact is, you are going to spend an awfully large portion of your life at work, and the only person that is going to make you turn up every
day is yourself, so it’s important to know what motivates you.
Everyone is different, and studies by organisations such as UCAS and HESA have found that only 44% of last year’s school leavers were motivated by money when making career choices, so what else may affect your decision?
66% of last year’s school-leavers stated that wanting a particular career helped them decide whether to go to university or straight into the world of work, whereas 43% were motivated by just wanting to go to a prestigious university.
Only 20% of last year’s school- leavers based their choice on wanting to minimise student debt, regardless of the rise in tuition fees.
All of these factors have a different influence on different people, so you need to identify whether you are money-motivated, education- focussed or more akin to the 69% who just want to follow their personal interests.

Calypso Soft Drinks is launching a “Help Change the World” campaign to encourage teenagers to support Fairtrade.
Calypso conducted a sur- vey among 1000 teenag- ers (aged 11yrs-16yrs) to find out about the issues that really matter to them. They were also asked who
they considered to be the best role models and who they believed had the most power to do something to help resolve these issues.
Prince William, David Beckham and Gary Barlow came out on top as having the most power to change things, while One Direction star Harry Styles and Lady
Gaga also featured in the top 6.
For these teenagers, the most inspiring figures who have already made a difference to the world were Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Tim Berners-Lee.
