makes for lasting results as most of these veterinarians also spend the time to teach the owners about basic equine care and welfare. “The other thing I really like is that we also help these very poor people who rely on the animals to earn a living. It’s a way to help animals and help the poor at the same time,” she adds. According to Irene, “At the Brooke, they always

have a strategy when they go (into a country).” She says support for the organization is growing slowly but steadily, noting that her Canadian trainer has known about the Brooke for years and that there seems to be more awareness of the organiza- tion north of the border than in the United States. “When you

think of it, these war horses made it through World War I and lived only to be sold into even worse circumstances. All these years later something that started out sav- ing a handful of horses has turned into an organiza- tion that has reached millions,” Cindy says. (At www. thebrooke.org and www.thebrookeusa.org, visitors can get a glimpse of the harsh life these animals endure to help families make a living.) Today the Brooke operates in 11 countries, serving 1.1 million animals and supporting six million people across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Their ambitious goal for the next two years is to support two million animals by 2016. Here in North America, people don’t rely on work horses or donkeys to feed their families anymore. We forget that there are still places in the world where old traditions remain, and where horses, donkeys and mules are a means of survival. “Rising water floats boats,” Cindy says. “If knowledge and skill is improved across the board then everyone benefits, especially the animals.”
