Gallant Reflection HU, Score: 127.54

BLOODLINES AND BREEDING This Zweibrücker is sired by the Selle Français stallion Galant du Serein (Apache d’Andriers x Jalme des Mesnuls). Galant’s damsire is by the Selle Français founding sire, Almé. Galant’s dam’s bloodline includes the 1952 Kentucky Derby winner, Hill Gail xx, in the third generation. Gallant Reflection, fondly called “Reefer,” has jumper lines close up on both sides of his pedigree. His dam is EM Rohmanie (Rohdiamant x Warkant), a 2000 Hanoverian that owner Anne Sparks imported in utero who has produced nine foals for her. Two are full sisters to Gallant Reflection: Galatea HU and Gracefull Rendition HU. Rhomanie’s dam- sire Warkant was the Stallion of the Year for the Hanoverian Verband in 2002.

looking colt by Galant du Serein.” The four-month-old Reef- er earned a Premium Silver award at his 2009 inspection. Mario Sandoval, farm manager at Horses Unlimited, says

the colt was easy to train. “He was pretty friendly and quiet. He was on top of you all the time. You could lead him to the stall with just a carrot. From day one, he wanted to be with people.”

REEFER’S SCHWUNG Mario started Reefer on the lunge. He adds that the only problem with this colt was, “He didn’t like me to touch his ears when I was bridling him.” “He was always smart and quick to learn. He is easy to

work with, and not studdy at all,” Anne says of Reefer’s train- ing. Calling him “such a cool horse,” she enjoyed watching this colt develop. “He always had that schwung,” she says again. “You could really see it by the time he was two.” She planned to present him for licensing at an RPSI in-

Gallant Reflection, also known as “Reefer.” With a chuckle, Anne explains how Reefer got his

barn name. “He was in a field with two other colts, Noble Doppleganger HU and Get N’ Line HU. I ended up with their barn names because they would stand there and look at me, going ‘Huh?’ So they became ‘Dopey,’ ‘Grown Locally,’ and of course, Reefer.” Anne has since sold the other two boys, but knew early

on she would keep Reefer. “He was built very uphill from the day he was born. As a foal he was two inches higher in the withers, so yes, I thought he was a prospect right away. As a weanling, he never lost that uphill conformation.” “The other thing about him,” she adds, “was that he had

schwung.” Otto Schalter, German stud book director for the Rheinland Pfalz-Saar International (RPSI), noted that move- ment when Reefer was presented as a foal. “Good swing in the trot,” he had said, also praising the colt’s walk, neck and well-built hindquarters and summing him up as “a good-
