FOCUS ON BLYTH

AND IN WITH THE NEW!

Last year also saw the opening of their new 15MW drive train testing facility designed to replicate real-life conditions in a controlled environment; helping to improve reliability and the understanding of turbine performance. The world’s largest blade testing facility for testing wind turbine blades of up to 100m in length has also been commissioned.

DEMONSTRATION SITE

Meanwhile offshore, Narec has received a boost with dual planning consents being given for the construction of the UK’s largest 99MW offshore wind demonstration site and onshore substation. The site will accommodate a maximum of 15 turbines in 3 arrays offshore in water depths of 35m, 45m and 55-60m.

The demonstration facility for pre- commercial, prototype offshore wind turbines will be unique in global R&D terms enabling manufacturers and wind farm developers to test new turbine prototypes and subsea foundation technologies to be utilised in Round 3 sites and beyond.

OFFSHORE ANEMOMETRY HUB Narec has also installed a 104m high (above mean sea level) Offshore Anemometry Hub three nautical miles off Blyth to collect wind resource data, observe environmental conditions and collect wildlife data as part of the 99MW £300-£400 million offshore wind demonstration project.

The platform is also being used to allow clients to validate new devices and demonstrate the reliability and resource measurement accuracy of floating LiDAR against existing methods.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

With a strong industrial heritage, particularly within traditional industries, such as, shipbuilding and coal mining, Blyth continues to be a hub of activity both onshore and offshore into the 21st Century.

Having the world’s most comprehensive, state-of-the-art testing and R&D facilities and expertise on its doorstep has helped to play an integral role in the development and regeneration of Blyth and is helping the area to embrace the opportunities which the burgeoning offshore renewable energy sector offers.
