NEW DEVELOPMENT – BLYTH WORKSPACE


KEY FACTS & FIGURES • Narec has facilities for testing the largest wind turbine blades in the world – up to 100m in length - drive trains up to 15MW, 1/10th scale wave prototypes as well as electrical and power take-off systems.


• In 1992 the UK’s first offshore turbines were erected on the Pier at Blyth – 9 turbines with a capacity of 2.7MW.


• Blyth became the UK’s first pilot offshore wind farm when two 2MW turbines were commissioned in December 2000 – making history as the largest in the world at the time.


• In 2012 Hainsford Energy constructed the UK’s largest onshore turbine – 3.4MW on the Pier at Blyth.


• The Port of Blyth is a modern renewable-energy focused Trust Port currently handling up to 2 million tonnes of cargo each year.


• The Blyth estuary offers a range of sites for development and operations, some with Enterprise Zone status.


NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANIES IN NORTHUMBERLAND • Vattenfall - one of Europe’s largest generators of sustainable power and jv partner in the East Anglia Array has recently relocated to new premises in Hexham.


• IHC The Engineering Business specialises in the design and construction of pipe and cable lay equipment, sub-sea trenching and offshore handling equipment and has its HQ, design and management offices located in a stimulating rural setting at Stocksfield.


• Applied Superconductor - located at Blyth have successfully developed a Fault Current Limiter enabling efficient and safe connection of Distributed Generation to the National Grid.


• SKM provide Operations and Maintenance services for onshore and offshore wind turbines from their base at the Port of Blyth.


• MTL Group are a global supplier of secondary steel work for Tier 1 suppliers to the offshore and renewable energy sector including boat loading systems, working platforms and plate beams. With a large quayside facility in the Port of Blyth structural fabrications up to 300 tonnes are manufactured including cable reels.


• Alnmaritec – specialises in the design and build of aluminium alloy workboats including offshore wind farm service boats supplying customers worldwide from its base at Wimbourne Quay at the Port of Blyth.


WORKING TOGETHER


Arch, The Northumberland Development Company and partners have worked together to further improve infrastructure to ensure the county and region fully benefit from growth of the offshore wind industry, with a focus on the Blyth Estuary Renewable Energy Zone (BEREZ).


BEREZ


BEREZ is ideally placed with its marine engineering skills base and deep water port, with nearby development opportunities, to support the supply chain engaged in the renewables sector. A superb choice of sites located either on or nearby the quayside have been earmarked as potential component manufacturing development sites, or for operation and maintenance and R&D facilities.


Some of the sites have designated Enterprise Zone status and benefit from simplified planning and financial incentives. In addition to customised support, BEREZ benefits from a number of potential financial incentives to support investors.


Another exciting new dimension to the BEREZ offer was announced with the agreed planning permission of Blyth Workspace on Commissioners Quay.


The landmark new development will help to regenerate and enhance Blyth Estuary’s reputation as a centre of excellence in renewable energy and research.


Blyth Workspace will be a high quality, well designed, sustainable and contemporary workspace, targeted to attract organisations within the energy sector. The superb new serviced office accommodation will consist of high quality new office space to let with a range of office sizes; informal meeting and social areas; conference room facilities; high quality landscaping and access.
