downsmail.co.uk Richard Thick
– an apology IN last month's Downs Mail we stated that Cllr Richard Thick had supported Lorraine Penfold's gypsy application for land off Stile- bridge Lane, Linton. We would like to point out that
this was a character reference for Ms Penfold on a personal level, and not for the proposal itself. Cllr Thick had not seen the application when the letter was written. Since the article was published, Maidstone Council has withdrawn from its website the title “Letter of Support” referring to it.We apolo- gise to Cllr Thick for any misun- derstanding that may have arisen.
Orchard plan ROGER Lees wants to set up a car- avan and camp site on an orchard and open grassland in Stockett Lane, Coxheath. His planning application is for
12 caravan and 20 tent pitches as well as an office and utility block at Forstal Farm. A supporting state- ment says the scheme “is intended to make a more profitable use of the site for the benefit of the farmer, tourists and the local economy”. The orchard will be replanted “where necessary”. Maidstone Council will decide the application.

Talks aim to resolve health centre problems
A MEETING was held to help re- solve problems at ailing Staple- hurst Health Centre. A comprehensive survey in the village conducted by the Lib Dems suggested residents’ greatest con- cern was the health centre, with complaints that the surgery has sometimes had only one full-time GP for a population close to that of a small town. Parliamentary campaigner Jasper Gerard and surgery patient Paulina Watson had a meeting with Dr Thomas Reichhelm, managing di- rector of Malling Health, and

Elaine Handover, practice manager. It was stated that the surgery
would now have a third permanent GP, which will help patients build up proper relationships. It is also introducing online booking for ap- pointments. “Many people had expressed frustration that they could only book an appointment on the day and that the line was permanently engaged,” said Paulina. On the question of mothers ring-
ing up with children with high temperatures and not being seen, the surgery insisted such cases

would typically be treated as a pri- ority. Both parties agreed that more use could be made of the large building. NHS Properties still hasn’t given
a lease to Malling Health, which would help complementary practi- tioners share the space. Malling Health has a decade-
long contract and with that stabil- ity patients will be hoping the surgery can recruit and retain staff. “We will continue to monitor the situation and pass on feedback, both positive and negative,” said Cllr Stockell.
Ash trees can go
TWO ash trees may be removed in the High Street, Staplehurst. John Parsons-Smith has applied
for conservation area consent to fell the trees behind Hodges Place. His application says one of the trees has a cavity in its main stem, while the other is located at “extreme prox- imity to the house”. Maidstone Council will deter- mine the planning application.
