village on map PEN and ink drawings by Staple- hurst artist Ken Collins have found their way to the far corners of the earth – and raised almost £15,000. In autumn 2005 the first Staple-

hurst Calendarwas launched, with Ken’s drawings depicting land- marks and buildings in the village. Businesses were invited to spon-

sor the calendar pages to cover printing costs, with all proceeds from sales passed on to local chari- ties and village organisations. With sales of the tenth calendar

now completed the total amount raised is £14,457. Groups to have benefited include

local churches, Scout and Guide groups, Leonard Cheshire Home, The Weald Club for the Disabled, Staplehurst Youth Club, the local skate park and pre-schools. Proceeds for the 2014 calendar

were £1,522, and cheques for £507 each have been sent to Staplehurst Youth Club, Chapel Lane Pre- School and Staplehurst Under Five playgroup. Ken said: “Copies are sent to

family and friends in Europe, Aus- tralia,NewZealand, the USA– and many other countries.” Copies of the 2014 calendar, Around the Boundary, are available in village shops.

All-rounder Katie is hoping for Tokyo gold

SUTTON Valence student Katie Latter is going for gold after being picked out as a possible contender for Team GB. Katie (15), from Kingswood, rep- resents the county at U16 hockey and U17 cricket and shines at every sport she tries her hand at – includ- ing running, football and javelin. When she was applying for a

sports scholarship at the school, she was asked to bowl a ball in the cricket nets – something she had never done before. Today, she plays for the Kent U17 cricket team and also for Leeds and Broomfield

Cricket Club, where her batting av- erage in 2012was 108.

Katie’s go-

getter atti- tude has now won her a place in the lot- tery-funded Girls4Gold programme. She is one of

464 females who could be trained to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – not in any of her regular sports, but in canoeing.

However, if she fails to make the

grade in a rigorous selection process, which will see just 10 of the 464 participants go through, she could be offered a place on a train- ing programme for another sport. Katie, who is in the fifth form at

Sutton Valence School, had to pass a series of tests at the Olympic Park to win a place on the scheme. She said: “This is a huge oppor-

tunity and I am tremendously ex- cited. Even if I am not selected for canoe training, it opens the doors to opportunities in a whole host of other disciplines.”

Parking fears for Marden housing

KCC COUNCILLOR Paulina Stockell has criticised a proposal to build 124 homes at the Marden Cricket & Hockey Club in Stanley Road, Marden. In recentweeks Maidstone Coun-

cil has granted planning permis- sion for two other Marden developments: 144 homes in Par- sonage Farm and 130 homes on the

former MAPdepot site. Cllr Stockell wrote: “I fear that

with this site and the addition of the two large Goudhurst Road sites, there will be hundreds of ad- ditional car movements in Marden. “If there is not enough parking

on sites these will be displaced to the local roads and we can all see the amount already in Howland,

Maidstone and Goudhurst roads. How will commuter parking be dealt with, as it is only a stone’s throw to the station?” The club hopes to sell off the land

for housing to fund its move to a site in Maidstone Road, whichwas given planning permission last year. Maidstone Council will deter- mine the latest proposal.
