News Village post

office at risk Continued from page one

the owner said he was prepared to open from 8am to 6pm seven days a week and provide parking spaces. He even offered to put on minibus transport once a week from South Lane to Haven Farm. Cllr Eileen Riden, parish council

chair, said: “We have great sympa- thy with a lot of people in the vil- lage, but also with Gary and Janet, whowant to move on.” Leeds and Langley have also lost

their post offices and residents now face a drive to Maidstone or Head- corn to post anything larger than a standard letter, or to collect parcels, pensions and other benefits. Pensioners in particular would

miss the post office being in a cen- tral location, as would students at Sutton Valence School who are among its most frequent cus- tomers, said Cllr Riden. The Post Office spokesman said

it was now normal policy to oper- ate from retail shops in rural areas. A six-week consultation period

has now ended and, as Downs Mail went to press the Post Office was deciding whether to accept the Haven Farm offer, seek another so- lution – or face losing the village fa- cility in its entirety.

Health club closes as site is put up for sale

THE Old Rectory Health Club in Farleigh Lane, Barming, has fi- nally closed its doors to members. Just over a year after the owners gained planning permission to re- instate the historic building for res- idential use, members were given their marching orders and the gates were locked. The company website is now of-

fline and calls to the club go unan- swered. The Old Rectory and Coach House became a health and fitness

club in 1989. Planning consent was given in April last year for demoli- tion of the outbuildings and mod- ern extensions, with the restoration

Greenfield homes proposed

FIFTEEN homes could be erected on a greenfield site in Langley. Dawe Capital’s outline planning application relates to land that

fronts Horseshoes Lane and Upper Street and wraps around the rear of the existing properties at 20 and 22 Horseshoes Lane to a third, smaller frontage with Back Street. The planned homes would range from one-bedroomed flats to five-bedroomed houses. Six would be affordable housing. A supporting statement says the development would “retain the notable trees and retain the landscape character of the site”. Maidstone Council will determine the application.

of the main house into a six-bed- roomed home. The coach house was to be con-

verted to a studio and store, with a two-bay car barn, while a new five- bed dwelling with a detached garage and studio would also be build in the grounds. Torch Fitness, the company be-

hind the Old Rectory, made the ap- plication to the council, via planning consultants DHA, and it is understood the site is now to be out on sale for developers.
