RESIDENTS in Marden who suf- fered in the Christmas floods fear a new housing estate in the village will make things worse. Parts of the village were left
swamped in waste water when the pumping station in Pattenden Lane failed, discharging about 1.25mil- lion litres of water between Christ- mas Eve and January 10. The outline application, for 144 homes on land east of Goudhurst Road, is about 500m from the pumping station, yet Maidstone Council’s planning committee ac- cepted the scheme after Southern Water agreed that measures taken by the applicant, John Hall Volun- tary Settlement, were sufficient. Mr Coleman, on behalf of the ap- plicant, told the committee: “The development gets a new drainage

Parish Council, felt the proposal would exacerbate the flooding problem. Cllr Annabelle Black- more, the local borough member, called for the managing director of SouthernWater to explain how the drainage systemwouldwork. However, case officer Amanda

Marks said the Environment Agency was happy with the pro- posed drainage measures. The scheme was contrary to council policy restricting develop- ments in the countryside, but the council was unable to refuse be- cause it does not have a five-year land supply for new housing. The proposal was accepted by five votes in favour, two against and five abstentions.

“If money is spent on Staple-

THE homes would be reached via an access road created by demol- ishing semi-detached properties at 7 and 9 Goudhurst Road. There will be 16 one-bed flats,
eight two-bed flats, 29 two-bed houses, 48 three-bed houses, 39 four-bed houses and four five-bed houses.
be nightmare’ COUNCILLOR
Steve
McLoughlin, the local borough member, was concerned about the overall effect of more hous- ing proposed for Marden after planning permission was granted last year for 130 homes on the former MAP depot site nearby in Goudhurst Road. He said: “This is the second
out of five planning applica- tions coming to committee, which could add 500 homes to the village. This is a 30% in- crease in homes in the village yet nobody seems to be looking at anything holistically or plan- ning them to minimise disrup- tion to the people in Marden over the next five years. “It will be a nightmare, with developments being built si- multaneously and each one rac- ing to be the first on the market. “I simply don’t understand
why the developments can’t be determined incrementally. At least if this proposal went to appeal it would have allowed the residents of Marden to have their voice heard, which is more than they feel they have now.”
