downsmail.co.uk Flats scheme

A FORMER Indian restaurant in Union Street, Maidstone may be con- verted into three flats. Gary Munday has applied to estab-

lish a residential development at the closed Hill Town restaurant. Should Maidstone Council grant planning permission therewould be flats on all three floors of the 19th century grade II listed building. A supporting statement said: “The business has failed mainly due to the location in the vicinity of the town and the fact that the town centre at- tracts more members of the public for eating outlets.” It added that residential develop-

ments in the area had rendered the commercial use “alien” to its sur- roundings.

Classrooms consent

A NEW classroom extension is to be erected at Valley Park School in Huntsman Lane, Vinters Park. The Valley Invicta Academy

Trust was given planning permis- sion to create six more classrooms as well as a new kitchen and can- teen. A supporting statement said the

new classrooms would allow for the “re-ordering of some existing internal spaces which would take off pressure from both teaching and admin staff”.

Debt-ridden restaurant owner killed himself

THE owner of The Hengist restau- rant was facing a debt crisis and bankruptcy when he took his own life, an inquest heard. Paul Smith (42) was found hanged

at his home near the restaurant in Aylesford High Street. Close friend Robert Cater told an inquest that he knew the business- man had financial worries. He said that Mr Smith, who founded Regal Estates, could be the life and soul of the party at weekends but wouldn’t answer the phone during the week. “His mood would be very, very high

or very, very low.” The pair had arranged a bike ride on Sun- day, September 1 2013, but Mr Cater forced his way into the house

in Rochester Road,

Aylesford, that evening after his friend did not answer the door. He was unable to revive him. At 12.30am that day Mr Smith had sent drunken text messages to his girlfriend,Emma

Reynolds. The couple, who had been together for 18 months, had recon- ciled the previous day after an argu- ment. Miss Reynolds said he had promised: “I will change how I am. I will prove it to you.” When he died he had 251mg of al-

cohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit for driving is 80mg. He also had a low level of cocaine in his blood. Detective Sergeant Ian McCarthy said a letter re- ferring to a forthcoming bankruptcy hearing was found next to an empty vodka bottle. Coroner Patricia Hard- ing recorded a verdict of suicide.
