Aldi and drive-through may replace post office

AN ALDI supermarket, two non- food stores and a drive-through fast food restaurant are planned for the junction of Hermitage Lane and the A20 London Road, near Allington. The site is next to Sainsbury’s su- perstore and the Quarry Wood retail park, which includes Homebase, Hal- fords and Currys PCWorld. A joint application, submitted by HawkstoneVale and Royal British Le- gion Industries, seeks to demolish the old post office at 203 London Road and eight vacant bungalows built in the 1920s for servicemen disabled in World War I as part of the nearby

RBLI Village at Preston Hall. Anumber of other RBLI bungalows

which are still inhabited, and allot- ments, do not form part of the site. Discount food store Aldi would

take the largest unit, with 1,431sqm of floorspace, while two non-food retail units of 1,115sqm and 139sqm are planned. The restaurant would have a ground floor of 288sqm and an upper floor of 228sqm, as well as a drive-through facility. Aldi is the only firm yet to have been named. Access to the development would

be via a new road off Hermitage Lane, leading to parking for 130 vehi-

cles and a rear service yard. Outline permission was granted in

2008 for a single retail unit of 1,500sqm, an access road and parking for 60 cars. However, the applicants say a larger floorspace is needed to make the development viable. An area on the London Road frontage has been earmarked for a public artwork marking the RBLI’s history and links with the site. Key tenantswere said to be in place

subject to planning permission being granted by Tonbridge and Malling Council.Aylesford ParishCouncil has raised no objection to the scheme.
