Parking spaces may be reduced

which would mean more cars, and the council is being asked to provide over 19,000 new homes by 2031, he said.
The council’s integrated transport strategy will also look at improving walking and cycling facilities, pro- moting car sharing and improving flows around the town centre gyra- tory system – the bridges over the Medway. The council would also look at promoting greater use of the river. A park and ride facility had been discounted near Park Wood, as this would lead to increased traffic in Br- ishing Lane and, ultimately, a need for road widening, said Mr Jarman, although therewas the possibility of another facility at Blue Bell Hill, working in conjunction with Med- way Council. Members heard there had been no
major transport improvements in Maidstone for almost 30 years, apart from those associated with the mo- torways. Cllr DanDaley feltKCCshould be
asked to take on responsibility for park and ride, as happened in other counties such as Oxfordshire and Essex. He said: “At present, the park
and ride costs will fall on the Maid- stone tax payer – but this service is for the benefit of a much wider area.” Cllr Daley said he was concerned
the council did not have the funds to fulfil the requirements of the inte- grated transport strategy – but Mr Jarman said he was confident that development proposals due to be discussed later in February would support the infrastructure changes. There are already proposals in the pipeline for the widening of Sutton Road, which would gives buses pri- ority at peak times, although this was still a cause of dissent among members. After the February cabinet meet-
ing, the proposals will go out to pub- lic consultation. Cllr BrianMortimer said he felt the parishes around and including Linton should have been consulted in advance as the park and ride could have a significant impact on traffic flows in the area. Thameslink trains will serve Maidstone East from 2018 and Mr Jarman said itwas important for the council towork with other transport providers, as well as neighbouring local authorities such as Tonbridge and Malling.
Trees block CCTV Sycamores plan
WORKon protected trees is to be un- dertaken at Trinity Park, Church Street, Maidstone to reduce anti-so- cial behaviour. After a police request to improve
views from CCTV cameras, Maid- stone Council applied to coppice seedling ashes and to prune cherry, elder and robinia trees. Officers ac- cepted the proposal, which included the removal of deadwood fromlimes and pine trees, under delegated powers, which is allowed for tree ap- plications by the local authority.
MAIDSTONE Council wants to fell 16 sycamore trees in the car park at Maidstone Museum in Brenchley Gardens, St Faith’s Street. A planning application says the
trees are self-sown and blocking light from entering the art room and would be replaced with shrubs. Other work proposed includes the removal of a cherry tree and some pruning. The council’s planning committee
will determine the conservation area application.
Resident in car permit row
Continued from page one saying: “I now possess five permits, having only been able to afford an- other two. I had to buy these on the spot, or I could not have parked out- side my own home. I am sure there has been amistake as surely it cannot be justified that I have had to pur- chase more passes.” But a letter from the council said: “Whilst I appreciate your comments, I regret that the telephone advice you refer to in your emailwas incorrect. I have, however, since reiterated the correct instructions to the customer services department. “Parking services records verify
that the preceding three N3 permits issued in October 2013 for your pre-
vious property at Albany Street have subsequently been cancelled upon re- ceipt of your initial email on Decem- ber 3, which notified that you no longer reside in the N3 zone.” Left with three parking permits
that are not valid and another two that are, Mr Beech has now asked borough councillors Dave Naghi and Tony Harwood to look into the issue for him. Both promised to do so. Mr Beech added: “The council’s response does not give any explanation as to why the cost is justified. I assume it is down to greed and the assumption residents will not complain. “I don’t mind paying for services I
use, but I don’t see why I should have to pay the full amount twice.”
