EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear UTAMembers and Supporters,

Much of this magazine edition will focus on this year’s UTA Management Conference and Truck Expo. From my perspective, this event turned out to be very successful. I appreciate very much those who planned this convention, provided sponsorships, exhibits, entertainment and speaking assignments.

I want to express my appreciation to Scott Godfrey and his leadership team for supporting this convention. I would also like to thank Duane Braegger and his planning committee for their hard work in organizing a meaningful conference. They thought through every aspect of this event ensuring that everything from the food and entertainment to the golf tournaments went off without a hitch.

Participation was terrific! We had more than 425 conference registrants. I cannot express enough the importance of our sponsors. There were 11 Gold, 5 Silver, 12 Bronze sponsors and nine Carrier Co-Sponsors. Their support allows us to hold this, and many other events throughout the year, and is very important to our day- to-day operations.

I also appreciate those who provided exhibits. We were all able to gain a better understanding of products, services and technologies available to our industry by participating in 47 booth exhibits, 11 power unit displays and five trailer demonstrations. In addition, we were celebrated our history with five vintage trucks and one antique patrol car scattered throughout the facility. I recognize the expense and commitment it takes to get these vehicles to St. George and sincerely thank all who made this possible.

It was a special treat to have Ms. Anne Ferro, FMCSA Administrator take time out of her busy schedule to speak and interact with us. I appreciate her willingness to take questions and respond in a candid and professional manner. I also appreciate our local law enforcement and regulatory officials for their ongoing support and participation. No one of in attendance will likely forget the very special moment of reverence and patriotism offered during the opening session. Thanks to Mr. Craig Payne’s thoughtful invocation, the UHP Honor Guard’s presentation of the flags and Eileen Clasby’s rendition of the National Anthem, we were all uplifted and edified.

I offer special thanks to our other speakers. Mr. Phil Byrd, ATA Vice Chair did a tremendous job of highlighting the ATA’s initiatives, challenges, concerns and priorities. I appreciate his willingness to travel so far to support our conference. Ms. Natalie Gochnour and Mr. Scott Cornell were very informative and provided relevant and pertinent information for the trucking industry. Bill Sims also provided important and motivational information relative to creating a safety culture within our individual operations.

Finally, I want to express appreciation to Kurt Bestor and his band for providing a wonderful concert for our closing banquet.

By way of information, this year’s silent auction earned nearly $14,000 to be used for the association’s political action efforts. Dale Ipson and his team did a wonderful job organizing donations and orchestrating the auction activity.

Although, this event felt successful, I understand very well that there are always opportunities for improvement. I am grateful for to those who have already provided meaningful feedback and encourage anyone else who has constructive recommendations to call me at (801) 973-9370 or email suggestions to rick@ utahtrucking.com. Thanks to all who participated this year and I look forward to seeing those who could not make this year’s conference next year.
